The very concept of social studies suggests the student and the teacher working together to ensure that the shared values of scholarship, skills and citizenship are maintained. Without a generation of informed people to study social studies, to preserve its records, to absorb its lessons and relate them to its own problems, social studies, too, would lose its meaning.
The Social Studies Department of William J. Palmer High School supports the mission of the school and district by:
- developing and teaching a standards based curriculum that fosters a mastery of academic content skills. Students will develop a knowledge of the structure and purpose of history, geography, civics, economics and the social sciences. Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate, both in oral and written expression, with clarity and conviction.
- creating opportunities for students to learn the characteristics of productive and responsible citizenship. Students will demonstrate the ideals of citizenship, including: responsibility, honesty, cooperation, compassion and a sense of justice.
- creating a variety of assessments and that allow for a variety of learning styles and characteristics. Students will demonstrate mastery in these various styles.
