Welcome to PHS!
General William J. Palmer High School is a modest-sized secondary school located in downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado. The school has a student body of approximately 1800, and attracts enrollment from all over the city. The flagship high school of School District 11, Palmer has the oldest International Baccalaureate (IB) program in the area, founded in 1993. Palmer is located at 301 North Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs. The present building was built by the Works Progress Administration under Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940. Originally named Colorado Springs High School, Palmer High School was re-named in 1959 after the city's founder, General William Jackson Palmer.
Care and Share Fundraising makes goal of 100,000 pounds of food
Palmer high school participates in the annual Care & Share food drive along with most other schools in the city to provide much needed food for the Colorado Springs Food Bank. This year our theme was “Sock-it-to-Hunger”; our students carried socks in order to collect all day every day. We also had classroom collections every Tuesday and Thursday with the annual teacher competition. In addition, on Fridays we held Spirit days in which students could wear a forbidden item from the dress code for one day for one dollar.
The wiinners of the class competition are:
1st place: Geoff “the Die Hard” Lewis with 3349.5 pounds
2nd place: Kelly “ Come from behind:” Cline with 2909 pounds
3rd place: Roxie “With a Little Help from my Friends” Bridgewater 1485.83
This year two elementary schools donated their collected items to Palmer’s effort: Columbia and Stratton. The Palmer High school student council held many events to bring in more funds and food, plus conducted their own food drive with the permission of multiple merchants at the Uintah Gardens shopping center on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23. To meet the set goal Cabinet voted to contribute other funds we had raised from parade parking, and alumni donations. Many community members with a connection to Palmer donated generously and we were able to meet our goal of donating a total of over 100,000 pounds of food to Care & Share (Every dollar counts for ten pounds of food.) Liberty Toyota graciously offered to pick up all the boxes and delivered the items for us to the food bank on the southeast side of town.
Hopefully many people will receive the supplies they need for the Holidays and beyond due to the genuine efforts and generosity of the Palmer High School community.
Palmer Learning Forum Goes Live
Once District 11 approved the use of Wikis, the staff at Palmer conceived the idea of the Palmer Learning Forum. The Forum is hosted on District 11 servers so we have better control over the development and design of it. Our general goal is to give students and staff a vehicle where information is shared. Classes, courses, Professional Learning Communities, and other groups as needed will use the Forum. As one teacher mentioned, his classes get into a great discussion, the bell rings, and the discussion ends. With the Forum, the discussion can continue with students and teacher writing from home or school. The access to the forums is limited by passwords; others are open to the public. Eventually the private forums will have access through invitation/enrollment. To go to the forum, click here. The Forum can also accessed through a link on the student page.
