CREATIVE COOKERY A $15.00 lab fee is required

Grade: 11, 12 (Open to 10th grade students who have successfully completed Today’s Foods.)

This course explores planning and preparing food specialties. Foreign foods are emphasized including background, customs, and unique food preparation methods. Cakes, cake decorating, candy, food for special occasions, and yeast breads are some of the additional topics covered in this class.

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT
A $5.00 lab fee is required for infant simulator upkeep/repair.

This class is designed to help students become effective future parents. Students will understand the responsibilities of parenthood and practice techniques for nurturing productive, caring children. Through a variety of classroom activities including discussions, interactive projects, guest speakers, infant simulators and visual aids, students will learn skills for caring for children as well as the importance of self-care.

Prerequisite: Child Development recommended or teacher approval

This course relates to child care and child care careers. Upon completion of this course, students who academically attain an 80% or better will be able to transfer 6 credits to Pikes Peak Community College should they decide to choose that as their post graduate program. The primary focus for this course is children, prenatal to age eight. This course is based upon the eight standards in Colorado: child growth and development, health, nutrition and safety, developmentally appropriate practices, guidance, family and community relationship, diversity, professionalism, administration and supervision. Students will be required to attend 55 hours of lecture and classroom activities. Students will then be required to be out in the community for 60 hours of lab activities, observing, recording and interacting with young children in day care centers, preschools, and elementary schools.

For today's teenager, this course will explore foods for a contemporary lifestyle. Students will learn the skills of basic food preparation and nutrition. Labs are incorporated into each unit and include quick breads, poultry, fruits, vegetables, dairy, pizza, cookies, and foreign foods.

The importance of personal and family relationships for young men and women is explored through discussion, community resource people, films, current printed materials, and student projects. Sample topics include: coping with crisis, relationships within families, changing life styles, developing healthy self-esteem, stress management.

This course is offered in combination with Pro Start 1,2 and provides the foundation skills required for students to proceed through the Pro Start two (2) year food service/hospitality management curriculum offered to high school junior and senior students. It is a nationally certified program that is based on the study of food preparation, lodging, customer service, and business management coupled with 1+ years of mentored industry work internships in a broad spectrum of operations. This program is articulated with Pro-Management post-secondary programs. (The exact number of college credits available is yet to be determined.)

INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING THROUGH TEACHER CADET PROGRAM HONORS
Course Length: Two (2) Semesters
Grade: 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
Credits per Semester: 1.0 HONORS credit (Elective)

Students will be involved in a fast paced, innovative, hands-on curriculum where they gain knowledge about teaching and learning. The teacher cadet will develop and master effective skills that will be helpful in college and beyond, such as presentation, public speaking, writing, communication and reasoning skills. This is a yearlong honor’s elective where each student will make a difference with children as they "try out" teaching in a "mini-student teaching" experience.

These individualized courses are tailored to student needs. These courses are designed to teach basic self-care and living skills to ensure becoming a successful and productive member of the community.
