FREEHAND DRAWING 1

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities or Elective)Freehand Drawing 1 is an introductory course designed to offer students opportunities to create images from both observed and imaginary forms. The use of appropriate drawing tools and techniques will be emphasized to achieve the desired effects. Classroom activities will concentrate upon contour, gesture, mass and perspective drawings from life as well as the imagination. The cultural and appreciative aspects of art are incorporated into the course through various instructional resources and art production experiences.

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities or Elective)Freehand Drawing 2 continues the application of techniques, materials, and skills learned in Drawing 1. Advanced techniques will be used to create the illusion of weight, mass volume, and perspective (foreshortening and atmospheric) through drawing. Self-expression and refinement of drawing skills will be emphasized. The cultural and appreciative aspects of art are incorporated into the course through various instructional resources and art production experiences.
COMMERCIAL ART 1

Prerequisite: Freehand Draw 1 or Instructor ApprovalCommercial Art 1 is designed to introduce students to the various tools and techniques that are basic to the major areas of commercial art. These will include, but not be limited to, drawing and painting techniques, evolution of ideas, layout and package design, lettering and graphics. A general career orientation to commercial art fields such as illustration, advertising, cartooning and fashion illustration will also constitute a part of the semester's activities. Art history will be incorporated into the class activities through various instructional resources and art production experiences.

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities or Elective)Commercial Art 2 provides students with the opportunity to further increase their technical knowledge, skills and aesthetic awareness of the commercial art field. Advanced applications and activities will include learning more sophisticated graphic reproduction methods, and assemblage of individual student portfolios which are requested by most commercial art schools, colleges and businesses as a part of their entrance requirement. Art history will be incorporated into the class activities through various instructional resources and art production experiences.

Prerequisite: Freehand Draw 1 or Instructor ApprovalPainting 1 explores various painting techniques, elements of composition, and color concepts. Materials used for painting representational, expressive or abstracted images include, but are not limited to, tempera, watercolor, and acrylic. Fundamentals of composition, color, theory, and developmental skills will be emphasized. Art history will be incorporated into the course through aesthetics and criticism through varied instructional media and resources.

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities or Elective)Painting 2 affords the student the opportunity to continue developing advanced skills in painting techniques using representational, expressive, and abstracted images. Various materials will be utilized and emphasis will be on increased control of color and tools of painting. Art history will be incorporated into the course through films, slides, and reports. A variety of tools and materials will be utilized, and emphasis will be placed upon increased control of color and refinement of techniques. Art history, aesthetics, and criticism will be incorporated into the course through a variety of instructional media and resources.

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities or Elective)Painting 3 is an advanced course in the art of painting. Skills and knowledge of color, composition, and techniques gained in previous painting classes will be utilized for individual and creative problem-solving. Cultural and appreciative aspects of art will be incorporated through art history, art criticism, and aesthetics.

Prerequisite: Freehand Draw 1 or Instructor ApprovalSculpture 1 is an exploration of three-dimensional form familiarizing students with the tools, materials, and techniques of sculpture. Class activities will include casting, carving, molding, and assemblage in clay, wood, plaster, paper, wire, metal, and mixed media. Art history will be incorporated into the course through various instructional media and resources.

Prerequisite: Sculpture 1Sculpture 2 is designed to allow students to expand their knowledge and skills in three-dimensional form through structured assignments and individual projects. Class activities will include advanced techniques in casting, carving, molding, and assemblage. CERAMICS 1

Prerequisite: Freehand Draw 1Ceramics 1 is a course designed to offer students introductory experiences in hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Attention will be given to developing awareness of the aesthetic and utilitarian roles of clay as a design material. The elements and principles of design will be emphasized in planning and creating ceramic forms which utilize the techniques, processes, and materials of ceramics design. The cultural and appreciative aspects of art are incorporated into the course through various instructional resources and art production experiences. (12/94)

PHOTOGRAPHY 1
Course Length: 1 Semester

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities or Elective)
Prerequisite: Freehand Drawing 1. Student must have access to an adjustable 35 mm or larger film-size camera. Purchase of some supplies will be required.Photography 1 is an introductory course to teach camera operation, film processing, and black and white printing. Fundamentals of lighting, making of exposures, and usage of darkroom techniques will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on studying composition and working creatively with visual images. Art history, aesthetics, the camera, and criticism will be incorporated into the course through various instructional media and resources. (12/94)
PHOTOGRAPHY 2

Prerequisite: Photography 1. Student must have access to an adjustable 35 mm or larger film-size camera. Purchase of some supplies will be required.Photography 2 is designed to further develop the skills and techniques acquired in Photography 1. Technical, manipulative and problem-solving skills through the production of quality photographic prints which make a strong visual statement will be emphasized. Students will evaluate their individual works and those of others through verbal or written critiques. The history and impact of visual communication in the 19th and 20th centuries will be explored through films, slides, and reports. (12/94)
DIGITAL ART THEORY AND DESIGN 1

Prerequisite: Freehand Drawing 1 or Teacher ApprovalDigital Art Theory and Design is a course that offers students a basic understanding of computer produced art and graphic images. These include, but are not limited to, computer graphics in fine art, advertising, graphic design, typography and animation, desktop publishing, and web design. Included in the course will be an overview of current software and career awareness. Cultural and appreciative aspects of computer generated art will be incorporated into the course through instructional resources and production experiences.

Prerequisite: None. This course is an introductory course to IB Art and Design, a group six offering in the IB Diploma Program.IBMYP Art and Design provides students with opportunities to develop the ability to express themselves and their ideas about the world they live in, working both independently and as cooperative members of a group. The arts offer a unique combination of psycho-motor skills, a combination promoting intellectual, emotional and social development. The students will research, identify and discuss issues, provide insights, opinions, solutions, and resolutions, and reflect on, appreciate and evaluate art work. A developmental workbook will be required which reflects their development, their investigations and some record of the process of creative art work.
IB ART DESIGN 5, 6 STANDARD LEVEL

Prerequisite: IB ProgramThe aims of the programme in Art/Design are to: provide students with the opportunities to develop the aesthetic, imaginative and creative faculties; stimulate and train visual awareness, perception and criticism of the arts of various cultures; enable students to discover, develop and enjoy means of creative visual expression in the studio and elsewhere, which are suited to their temperament and capabilities; encourage the pursuit of quality, through training, individual experiment and persistent endeavor; exemplify and encourage a lively, inquiring and informed attitude towards art and design in all its forms, both in history and today. At the Standard Level the candidate will choose either Studio (Practical) Work or Research Workbook.
IB ART DESIGN 5, 6, 7, 8 HIGHER LEVEL

The Higher Level programme is a two-year course. It consists of two parts, both of which are compulsory: Studio (Practical) Work and Research Workbook.
