The Physical Education department at Mitchell High School has a wide range of activities to develop students' minds as well as their bodies.  While they are enrolled at Mitchell, students will have to take a minimum of three credits of  P.E. to graduate.

The Departments goals are simple:

1.  Develop skills for individual, dual, and team sports.
2.  Gain a knowledge of rules and strategies for various activities.
3.  Develop or attain a physical fitness level commensurate with ability.
4.  Be given an opportunity to learn to carry over activities that will contribute to worthwhile uses of leisure time.

For the enrolling Freshman, P.E. is divided into nine-week units that stress weights\conditioning, and total body fitness.  As Freshmen, they will also have to take a nine-week unit of swimming in our pool here at Mitchell. It is also important to note that Freshmen will only be able to enroll in one semester of P.E.  Once you are a sophomore (or any other grade for that matter) you may take P.E. as much as you like.  Also, you may choose from a certain number of activities offered every semester.  These are used to fill the four P.E. requirements listed below.

1. Swimming

2. Fitness Conditioning
3.  Individual\Dual Sports
4.  Team Sports

The activities offered stress a wide variety of physical skills and strategies for playing a game.

Some of the courses offered are:

Archery Recreational Swim
Badminton Scuba*
Basketball Soccer
Bowling* Softball
Fitness/Conditioning Speedball
Flag Football Team Handball
Floor Hockey Tennis
In-Line Skating Volleyball
Recreational Games Weight Training

*Scuba:  This introductory course provides beginner level instruction in scuba diving to students who are 15 years and older.  All gear and instruction is provided by Divers' Reef certified dive masters.  There is a $110.00 fee for this semester course.

*Bowling:  The goal of bowling will be to develop the fundamental skills.  Students will receive instruction on equipment care, proper etiquette, safety, and scoring.  Students must be able to transport themselves from Mitchell to Classic Bowl for one semester.  A fee of $40-50.00 will be assessed each quarter (so $80-100.00 a semester).

Health

Another important aspect of the Physical Education Department is the Health Unit that is required.  Usually, students take this class when they are sophomores.  The course influences attitudes toward health which will promote respect for the human mind and body and the factors which foster optimum healthful living.  Good health shall be identified as mental, social, and physical well-being and not merely the absences of disease and infirmity.  Emphasis will be placed on developing self-esteem and positive interpersonal relationships.  The students will be encouraged to explore the emerging health information and develop the ability to weigh the validity of such information  for application to their existing  health status.
