Wheels of Learning
Origin
of Wheels of Learning:
In 1991, the National Center for
Construction Education and Research (NCCER) was established by the
construction industry to develop and maintain standardized craft training
programs. Its nationally accredited Wheels of Learning program is modular in
format and built on industry-wide competency standards. Covering 25 different
craft areas, Wheels of Learning is considered the benchmark for craft
training in the construction industry. (Carpentry is offered at Mitchell High
School)
Description
This course is designed to give
hands-on construction experience.
This course covers:

Power Tools

Blueprint Reading
Students will begin to develop
skills necessary for a career in the construction industry.
Job Site Visits
The Construction Technology Class
conducts field trips to actual job sites to observe first hand the various construction
trade. Students are given an opportunity to see the working
environment and see the career possibilities in construction. The
students are able to ask questions of the job superintendent to better
understand the different aspects of the construction field.
Job
Shadowing
Students from the Construction
Technology Class are given the opportunity to observe the work one-on-one
with a foreman or superintendent for two hours to get a more in-depth perspective
to the various construction trades.
Summer
Employment
Major
contractors in the area offer students summer employment. Students can experience different construction trades
to help in making better career decisions in the industry.
