Mitchell High School Cisco Networking

WHAT IS THE CISCO ACADEMY

The Cisco Networking Academy is a program designed to introduce students to the networking field. Students learn the theoretical background of computer networking and they gain hands on experience  in the shop. Topics covered in the first year of the program include electricity, optics, the OSI reference model, and IP addressing. Students learn about the devices needed to make a Local Area Network (LAN). The focus of the second semester is on routing. A router is a device that "routes" data from one system to another. Routers make the Internet possible. Naturally, students learn about Cisco routers since this is a Cisco course. Most of the material from the first year is not specific to Cisco products. The third and fourth semester expand on the knowledge gained so that students can sit and write their CCNA (Certified Cisco Networking Associate) exam before they leave high school.

Our Cisco program is also recognized by Pikes peak Community College and you will earning credits for the college at the same time you are earning high school credits.

Dr. Kenneth Holmes

When I graduated from High School, I became an electrical apprentice and served a 4-year apprenticeship in the electrical construction industry. I worked for many years on various type projects from large office towers to underground subways. It seemed in the winter I worked outside and in the summer I worked inside with no air conditioning as we were installing the electrical services.

After several years of being a journey person electrical I attended the University of Western Ontario and became a High School shop teacher. While teaching electrical shop I attended the University of Windsor and completed a BA. M.Ed, and PhD program. Then I moved to western Canada where I taught High School and was a guidance counselor. Around 1999, I took early retirement and was going to travel but a great teaching opportunity was offered to me at Pickens Tech in Denver Co. It was there I was certified in teaching CISCO networking.

Each summer I go back and work at the electrical trade and try and make sure that I am also involved in communication cabling.

Some of my other interests include long distance running. Hiking and camping. I also like to do water color painting and have enjoy writing technical articles as well as poetry and prose.
