About Mitchell High School

History of Mitchell's Namesake

The name 'Billy Mitchell' still raises the blood pressure of retired soldiers and sailors and quickens the pulse of airmen today. He was, of course, not the only American theorist concerned with the future role of the air forces, but he was the most prolific in his writing and spearheaded a public crusade for an independent air force.  A man of action as well as words, Mitchell's bombing exhibitions on German Warships in 1921 and his court marshal in 1925 are the well known events in his life.  But it was Mitchell's ideas and personality which left an incredible stamp on American airmen and the general public.
