4.4 Students
know the structure of the solar system, composition and interactions of
objects in the universe, and how space is explored. Scott Carpenter Planetarium at Mitchell High School is available for visiting school groups. A student who was in Astronomy Honors last year and who has experience operating the planetarium provides the presentations. Presentations
include*: The Current Sky: (all grades) A live program presented on our current night sky, seasonal constellations, and how to locate certain stars, planets, and more. Approximately 40 minutes "Our Place in Space" (K-2nd) A commercial program (slides
with tape narration) that takes students on a journey with a group of
animals as they explore daily motion, the solar system and constellations.
Approximately 25 minutes, supplemented with currently visible
constellations and planets. "Bear Tales and other Grizzly Stories" (3rd-Middle School) A commercial program (slides with tape narration) that joins a family on a camping trip to look at the Spring sky. Stories on how constellations received their names and also a look at some things you can't see with your naked eye. Approximately 30 minutes "The
Light Hearted Astronomer"
(5th-Adult) A
commercial program (slides with tape narration) customized for each
season. The narrator shares
his enthusiasm for amateur astronomy. Approximately
30 minutes “Women Hold Up Half the Sky” (5th- Adult)
A commercial program produced by middle school students in
California illuminates the many contributions of women astronomers over
the years. *Other programs can be developed provided sufficient lead-time is available. |
