All Mann Reads

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

All Mann Reads (similar to the All Pikes Peak Reads program sponsored by PPLD) is a program that focuses on engaging all members of a community around the reading of a single book. Events and celebrations are planned around the text and encourage interaction amongst all community members.  The Mann Middle School community includes its students, their parents, staff members, and community members at large from within the school's neighborhood boundaries.

During the course of the 2008-2009 school year we will be reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (aka The Wizard of Oz) by author L. Frank Baum. This book, first published in 1900, kicked off the incredibley popular Oz series that grew to include 40 books (Baum wrote the first 14 of the series), and has since inspired a number of movie, TV, and Broadway versions and interpretations.

Signet Classic publication, 2006, includes original drawings.

How can I get involved?I've read the novel!

The best way to get involved personally is to first read The Wizard of Oz. It is available at a number of book stores across town as well as from PPLD. Your student will have access to signing a copy of the book out from their Language Arts teacher. Additionally, you can read or print the entire text from the Internet at http://www.literature.org/authors/baum-l-frank/the-wonderful-wizard-of-oz/

You may find yourself surprised by the differences between the novel and the movie!

Please encourage your student(s) to read the book as well, and consider reading the text together. The more readers we have, the more interaction we can have across the school community. Throughout the course of the school year there will be various events inspired by The Wizard of Oz. We look forward to seeing you and your family participate in these events and opportunities.

What about Volunteering?

We are seeking parents to volunteer by supporting a staff member who hosts or creates an "Oz inspired" event. This would be a relatively short term commitment. This could include any number of skills/talents...such as organizing or coordinating an event, helping from a creative perspective, or inspiring involvement with local businesses and community members. The Emerald City is the limit and we look forward to hearing your ideas and interests.
