Mann, considered the "Father of American Education," was born in the late 1700's and had to prepare himself for college because the only schooling he could get was for short periods a few times a year.
He wanted schools that would be equal and open to every child.
Mann felt that a non-religious common school would be the "great equalizer" and help improve poverty, crime, and immorality.
Mann helped establish the first public school in the United States in 1839.
Mann was the first to fight for a six-month minimum school year.
Mann was the first to open a public teacher's college.
Mann was a lawyer, a legislator, a senator, a professor, and the president of a college.
Mann said shortly before his own death,"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for Humanity."
