	Orchestra and Beginning Guitar are two elective options available to your student at Mann MS. Below you will find a description of each of the classes, as well as documents that support Ms. Possehl's programs.
Orchestra
A child's education is not complete unless it includes the arts. Playing a stringed instrument enhances a child’s quality of life. It provides creative, emotional, and social opportunities and can also lead to improvements in academic performance in other areas beyond music. Orchestra class at Mann Middle School consists one each of grade 6, 7, and 8 orchestra classes. Beginners are always welcome. Orchestra is a year-long class and provides students with learning and performance opportunities on violin, viola, cello, and bass. The primary focus is on the development and expansion of basic skills which are necessary for effective instrumental music performance. In addition to large group ensembles, individual growth and achievement are encouraged through participation in adjudicated solo and ensemble contests, honor orchestra, and private lessons. Students will perform in an evening concert at the end of each quarter.
Beginning Guitar
Learning the guitar can provide a lifetime of enjoyment. The Beginning Guitar Class Level 1 is quarter long introductory class that teaches students without prior experience how to play an acoustic guitar. Skills such as correct playing position, chords, strumming and picking techniques, and note reading will be taught using a variety of musical styles including rock, blues, folk, classical – to name a few. If possible, parents should provide their child with a guitar (either steel-string guitar or nylon-string) for home practice. If this is not possible, there are some instruments available for those who are unable to provide their own. There are also school owned guitars and text books that will be provided for in school use. Note: No electric or bass guitars are used in this class, but they can be used as a home practice instrument. We hope to begin a Beginning Guitar Level 2 class soon for those students who have successfully completed level 1.
