Patrick Henry's

Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death

" Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" is one of the most famous quotations in American history. It comes from a speech made by Patrick Henry on March 23, 1775, to the Virginia House of Burgesses just one month before the Revolutionary War began. The Virginia House of Burgesses was the lawmaking body of the Virginia colony. Among those attending the meeting were future presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.   Give Us Liberty!    These fiery words resounded throughout the halls at Madison Elementary last week.  Patrick Henry and his family visited the school and spoke to each of the classes about his commitment to make America a free country.  Patrick’s children were concerned because their father wanted to give a riotous speech that included the words, “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death!”  Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia was put out, to say the least, at this obvious act of treason.  Though the Loyalists (those who were loyal to England ) and Patriots disagreed violently, in the end, England could not keep the Patriots from establishing a free country.  Liberty prevailed and the Constitution was written.  It is the document that sets the standards by which the laws and government of our country, the United States of America, are based. Mrs. Frazier's fifth grade students preformed their Constitution play for all the students at Madison.  Mrs. Frazier’s class is grateful for the blessings of Liberty in their lives and they hope to use their freedoms in ways that show their gratitude and determination to be the best citizens they can be.

Give Us Liberty !
