Readiness skills students should know and be able to perform on the first day of
Third Grade

Reading

· Make logical predictions

· Sequential order of events (retell story)

· Identify the main idea

· Follow written directions

· Knows short and long vowel sounds

· Knows difference between vowels and consonants

· Fluent oral reading at beginning 3rd grade level

· Identify all story elements (setting, characters, problem, solution)

· Look back strategy for answering comprehension questions

Math

· Knows addition/ subtraction facts memorized 0-18 (EXTREMELY IMPORTANT)

· Uses analog and digital clocks to tell time to 5 minute intervals

· Count money

· Read, write, and order numbers up to 100

· Knows problem solving method

· Knows difference between even/odd numbers

· Rounding to tens and hundreds

 

Spelling/Writing/ Language

(Important) Must be able to construct a 5 sentence paragraph with a topic sentence, 3 supporting details, and a conclusion

Spell K-2 no excuse words

List given words in alphabetical order

Form manuscript letters correctly

Identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a sentence

Write complete sentences in paragraphs and in reading response questions
