Art/Music/Physical Education Art: The art program at King Elementary is designed to meet the needs of students in grades kindergarten through fifth. Instruction is modified to accommodate the needs and ability levels of all students that participate in art activities. The art standards addressed at King emphasize the basic components of visual arts and recognize and use the arts as a form of communication by relating the visual arts to history and culture. By providing lessons that foster the knowledge of materials and techniques in a "hands on" program and by relating the visual arts to other disciplines, students learn to access the art world, past and present. This enables the students to better understand their own world while developing the imagination necessary to perceive a productive vision for the future. In addition to after school art classes provided each semester, King students participate in several major art contests held in the Colorado Springs area. Each student will have his/her art displayed in the King art show. Student art is continually on display in our hallways and front bulletin boards. Once a year, a guest artist conducts art classes or visits the art room as a guest speaker. Music: Research has shown that passive listening to music affects human intelligence. However, the strongest effects of music are to be found in the active participation of music making. The King Elementary music program provides musical instruction that centers on participation. District, state, and national standards are the foundation for the musical curriculum, and each student is carefully regarded and accommodated. Musical activity is widespread. Grade-level musical programs are presented throughout the school year, and concerts featuring the Lion Choir, String Orchestra, and King Band are also held. The Lion Choir is a choral group that is open to third, fourth, and fifth
grade students. It meets once a week after school and performs for school and
community events. The String Orchestra consists of fourth and fifth grade
students who are provided instruction on the principles of string instruments
and meets twice a week during school hours. The King Band includes fifth grade
students who are instructed on the rudiments of brass, woodwind, and percussion
instruments. The band meets twice a week during school hours. The King Elementary physical education program emphasizes the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of each child through games, sports, activities and exercises. While the children participate in fun and vigorous games and sports, they improve their cardiovascular fitness, muscle endurance and flexibility. They also develop efficient gross motor movement patterns. Children learn about basic body mechanics, readiness for movement activities, rules for games and sports, as they develop a positive attitude conducive to teamwork and sportsmanship. For students who enjoy the vigorous physical activity of gym class, King Elementary offers a before school "Sports Challenge" program Monday through Thursday during the school year. Students participate in a variety of sports including soccer, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, team handball, and softball. An extramural basketball program is offered for boys and girls in grades four and five. Competitive games, played against other elementary schools, are scheduled in late January and February. |
