Reading/Writing:

Our Guided Reading program is based on Macmillan/McGraw-Hill’s Spotlight On Literacy series. This affords the student success through the reading of high-interest literature. This all-inclusive program develops language arts competency through lessons and activities for spelling, phonics, writing, and grammar. We use the Rebecca Sitton Spelling Series and a McGraw-Hill Language Arts book. We use Step Up to Writing, Writing Rubrics, McRel Strategies, journal writing and various multi-media activities and integrated software to reinforce language concepts.

Math:

Second graders work in the Everyday Math Series. Our books are consumable.  This Math Series reflects National Math Standards. Emphasis is placed on mastery of basic concepts, number sense, problem solving, and estimation. McRel Strategies are also used to enhance understanding.

Science/Social Studies:

Topics in the second grade science curriculum are Air and Weather, Balance and Motion, and Insects. Science kits provided by the District enhance our program greatly. Science notebooks provide students with the opportunity to record their discoveries. We use Social Studies Alive! - My Community to support our social studies curriculum. Second graders study Kenya as a country of comparison.

Classroom Management/Parent Communication:

Positive, firm, but fair classroom management practices are used to enhance learning for all students. Classroom rules are posted in each classroom. Home/school communication is very important to the education of your child. Friday folders are used to effectively send information back and forth.
