Citing A Book as a Source of Information

Author [last name first].  Title [underlined].  City where book is published:  Publisher, copyright date.

Example:

Soloff-Levy, Barbara.  How to Draw Sea Creatures.  Mahway, N.J.:  Watermill Press, 1987.

Citing A Chapter of a Book as a Source of Information

Author [last name first].  Chapter Number, "Chapter Title" [in quotations].   Title of the Book [underlined].  City where book is published:  Publisher, copyright date.

Example:

Noel, Thomas J. and Smith, Duane A.  Chapter 5, "Up the Rio Grande."  Colorado:  The Highest State.  Niwot, CO:  University Press of Colorado, 1995.

Citing An Article in a  Magazine as a Source of Information

Author [last name first].  "Title of Article [in quotation marks].  Title of Magazine [underlined].  Date of Magazine [day month year]:  Page numbers of Article.

Example:

"King Tut Rules!"  Weekly Reader, Edition 3.  23 September 2005:  p3.

Note - The article does not tell the author, so that part is left blank.

Citing A Print Encyclopedia as a Source of Information

"Title of Article" [in quotation marks].  Title of Reference Book [underlined],  Volume Number.  Edition.  Date Published.

Example:

"Panda."  The World Book Encyclopedia,  Volume 15.  2001 Edition.  2001.

Citing An Online Encyclopedia as a Source of Information

Author (last name first).  "Title of Article" [in quotations].  Title of Reference Work [underlined].  Online.  <URL> [online address; use < and > to bracket the URL].  Date of access [day month year].

Citing A CD-ROM Encyclopedia as a Source of Information  (Use also for CD-ROM Atlas or other CD-ROM source of information).

Author [if given - last name first].  "Title of Part of Work" [in quotations].  Title of Product [underlined].  Edition or release [if given].  CD-ROM.  City of Publication:  Publisher, year of publication.

Example:

Wallenchinsky, David.  "Olympic Games."  World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia.  3.20b.  CD-ROM.  Chicago:  World Book, 1996.

Citing A Source Found on the Internet as a Source of Information 

 Important Note -- Google, Yahoo, Mama, etc. are not sources of information.  Don't cite them.  They lead you to places on The World Wide Web.  Also, have you evaluated this page for credibility?

Author [if known - last name first].  "Title of Article" [in quotation marks].  Title of Site or Larger Work [if known - underlined].  Date of Document [if known - day month year].  URL [online address; use < and > to bracket URL.  Date of access. 

Example:

"Helen Keller."  The American Foundation for the Blind.  <http://www.afb.org/section.asp?sectionid=1>  10 October, 2005.

Note:  This site gives neither the author's name nor the date the page was produced, so both of those are left blank.

Citing Film, Slide Show or Videotape as a Source of Information 

Title [underlined].  Medium [film, videocassette, DVD, etc.].  Production Company.  Date.  Length [unit of time].

Example:

Flying Fish and Flightless Birds -- Nature's Mistakes?  Videocasette.  Classroom Science Production, 1993.  30 minutes.
