What's Going On?

Hey there Jenkins!

Student Council is proud to present two contests this month for Black History Month. One is a daily contest and the other is a long term project.

Daily – Throughout the month of February, Student Council will be sponsoring a daily trivia quiz. Each day, a question will be read over the announcements; students will find the answer to the question, write it on a sheet of paper with their name, grade, and Mastery teacher, and then deposit the sheet of paper in the yellow Black History Trivia box located in the Media Center by 1:30pm that day. Each day, the answers received will be reviewed and all of the correct answers will go into a drawing. A name will be pulled and the winner will be announced the next day during announcements. Daily winners will receive a prize.

Long-term – “Who Inspires You?” On behalf of JMS Student Council, it is our pleasure to present our 1st annual Black History Month Initiative. Our creative contest entitled, “Who Inspires You?” is a fantastic way to actively participate in learning about leaders in American black history. The contest, which runs February 1st through February 21st, asks student to identify a leader in American black history and tell us how he or she inspires them to be a leader today.

Students can express their thoughts in one of four categories:

Poetry

Essay (500 words or less)

Artistic Expression (painting, drawing, photography, or sculpture)

Posterboard

The winning piece in each category will be chosen based on creativity, passion, and knowledge of the identified leader.

Four prizes will be awarded – 1 in each category – All submissions are due by the 21st of February and will be displayed in the Media Center. Please have students submit their final projects to Ms. Scott, Ms. Montoya, or Mrs. Pustizzi.

We hope you will find this initiative as worthwhile and exciting as we do. It is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge of an important part of American history as well as recognize their ability to apply those lessons to their lives today.

Thank you on behalf of Jenkins Student Council for supporting our contests!
