The jaguar, the largest, most ferocious and powerful feline of the Western Hemisphere was chosen as the mascot to represent Jenkins Middle School. The mighty cat is found in South and Central America, Mexico and at one time as far north as New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. At home in many environments including forest, treeless pampas, deserts, and thickets, it seemingly prefers to roam along jungle streams, where it can swim to cool off. The jaguar will pursue almost any kind of animal within its range and being a good swimmer and climber, it often follows its prey into the river and to the top branches of trees. It has few enemies except large crocodiles and alligators, and man. One distinguishing characteristic of this big cat is its roar that send nearby inhabitants fleeing in fear. The jaguar measures up to six and a half feet including a two foot tail. It stands approximately 28 inches high at the shoulder and weighs up to 250 pounds. The jaguar has black spots or rosettes enclosed by black circles on a yellow gold coat. It is from this coloring that the school colors of black and gold were selected. The jaguar represents Jenkins well in our pursuit of excellence.
