We are currently featured on an international website, www.hopefoundation.org under success stories. This storywas developed by our building leadership team and me. We believe that Jefferson is a school of excellence and, in partnership with you; will continue to ensure our students receive a wellrounded educational experience that meets their needs socially, emotionally and academically. On Oct.24th our Honor Choir made their debut under the direction of Mrs. Richart. Their musical presentation was during our morning assembly and that afternoon they were videotaped by Channel 16, in conjunction with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, (UCCS), for the grand opening of UCCS “English Village” located in Daegu, S. Korea. Our students not only sang for the grand opening ceremony, but will be pen pals with students living in S. Korea beginning next month. As you can see Jefferson is a school to watch. Our academic targeted goal for every subject area is 80%+. Through reading, writing, math, social studies, science and all specialswe’re aiming high as a team of one. As we go forth please review the data charts on page 7. Without you we will not make the gains that our children deserve. Please encourage them to read daily, review their math facts and demonstrate appropriate leadership skills at all times. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you November 8th at our “Bring Your Parent to Lunch” day starting at 11:00 a.m. Sincerely, Theresa Newsom, Principal SCHOOL SCHEDULE (REVISED) • 7:25am Breakfast servedthrough 7:45am. • 7:45am Morning AssembliesMonday and Friday • 7:45am Playground RecessTuesday, Wednesday, Thurs • 7:55am “First Bell”• 8:00am Classes begins• Recess: - 9:20am-9:35am-Grades K-2 • 11:00am Primary Lunch /Playground Grades K,/1,/2 • 11:30am Intermediate lunch /Playground Grades 3/4/5 • Recess: - 1:15pm-1:30pm-Grades 3/4/5 • 2:30pm Afternoon dismissalInside this issue: Art Literacy Night/ 2Community Message/ Sports News/student council 3 Counselor Corner Girls/Boy w Promise 4 Department News 5Positive Referrals 6CSAP Scores 7JEFFERSON JET’S NEWS JEFFERSON JET’S NEWS Page 2 Art and Literacy Night Jefferson Elementary hosted an Art and Literacy Night on Tuesday, October 16 for parents and students to learn about the relationshipbetween art, writing, and reading. Eric Carle’s books were featured as examples of this relationship. Lisa Joseph, Library Technology Educator, reviewed the parts of a book and had students to participate in a matching game to reinforce the learning and demonstrate a technique parents can use to teach their child. Becky Traynor, Art teacher, then demonstrated how to make a book using materials prepared in advance with volunteers. The triangle folding books were a huge success and the students and parents worked together to create them. They then became authors and illustrators of a book titled, My Family. The evening included prize drawings for books and art supplies so the students can continuetheir work at home with help from their parents. All students in attendance were given a prize and a Scholastic Klutz BuildaBook kit. These kits were awarded as a grant to Jefferson from the District 11 Purchasing Department and were valued at $6.00 each for a total of $300.00 to benefit our student’s literacy activities at home. All fifty children in attendance went home with a triangle book, a book kit, and a prize. Parents, students and community volunteers were recognized for their participation in the activity. The smiles and evaluations attest to the fact that fun was a major part of the evening. 196 Students participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record!! Every classroom teacher participated. Hooray!! During the students’ library time I am teaching the Second Step program to all students grades K-5. The Second Step program is designed to help children learn to use better ways of thinking and responding in their everyday interactions with their peers. The program focuses on social skills that research suggests may be pivotal in helping children succeed socially and avoid aggression toward their peers. We are currently in Unit I. It builds a foundation of empathy skills – a focus on emotions. We’ll be moving into Unit II, which is emotion management, and teaching calming-down strategies. We’ll follow through with Unit III which helps children master the calming-down strategies and problem-solving steps. In teaching this series we hope to stop the bullies before they become bullies, and provide a safer place for all our students.
