About Irving Howbert
A Message From the Principal
School Mission

Howbert Elementary School is located at the base of Pike's Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  We have a beautiful view of the mountains and Garden of the Gods from our school.  How would you like to look at this every day?  WOW!!

Irving Howbert
Our school was built in 1959.  It was named after Irving Howbert, an early pioneer of the Pike's Peak Region.  Irving Howbert came to our area with his family at the age of fourteen.  From 1868 to1879, he served as Clerk of El Paso County.   In this position, he signed the legal papers incorporating Colorado Springs.  Irving Howbert was active in politics.  He developed a municipal water supply for our city and helped organize the first gas company.  Howbert had many business interests including mining and railways.  He built the Colorado Springs Opera House with his silver mine profits.

A Reflection from Howbert's Principal:
It is with great excitement that I welcome you to Irving Howbert Elementary School, home of the Hornets. Established in 1959, Howbert Elementary serves the Pleasant Valley Neighborhood with a great reputation and commitment to the children, parents, and the future.

This small preschool/kindergarten through 5th grade school contains multiple facets combined with a strong partnership with the community. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the Building Advisory Accountability Committee (BAAC), the Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts of America, Junior Achievement, as well as numerous individuals are some of the many contributors to the school’s overall success. Internally, our strong literacy-based instructional program combined with after school tutoring, intramurals, choir, foreign language classes and an assortment of other activities equate to an effective school where student achievement is consistently above Colorado’s and District #11’s productivity. I welcome you to join us in strengthening our school and helping to build a better education for our children, community and the future of our country. Together, We’re Better Than Ever!
