We at Holmes believe that the way students dress affects their behavior and the quality of their schoolwork, and reflects on Holmes Middle School .  Students should exercise good judgment and be appropriately attired for the classroom.  Any clothing accessories or body adornments that interfere with or disrupt the educational environment are unacceptable.  Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to standards of safety, good taste, and decency.  Acceptable footwear is required to be worn at all times.  It is not acceptable for either boys or girls to wear extreme types of attire. 

Examples of clothing, accessories, or body adornments that are not acceptable:
bullet

  contain language or images that are vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene

bullet

promote illegal or violent conduct, such as the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia

bullet

contain perceived threats such as gang symbols

bullet

  expose cleavage, private parts, the midriff, or undergarments or that is otherwise sexually provocative

bullet

are considered sleepwear

bullet

are headgear       

bullet

are sunglasses

In addition, students will not wear the following at Holmes or at school activities during the 2006-2007 school year:

·         jogging shorts, running shorts, “cut-off” shorts or any shorts with an inseam of less than 4 inches

·         skirts and dresses shorter than fingertip

·         sagging, oversized clothing or clothing with loose, dangling straps or belts

·         body adornments such as eyebrow, nose, or mouth piercing; mohawk haircuts, hair with spikes, non-traditional/excessively bright/off-colored (pink, green, blue, purple etc.) hair dye, and black or other off-colored lipsticks and fingernail polish

·         pants with a slogan written across the buttocks

·         tank tops with straps less than 2-inch or sleeveless shirts that expose the torso (“muscle” shirts)

·         spaghetti-strap tops, halter tops, backless clothing, “tube” tops or garments made of fishnet or mesh

·         inappropriately sheer, tight or short clothing

·         torn, ripped, or cut clothing

The administration may establish additional guidelines and reserves the right to exclude other types of clothing during the school year if we deem it necessary.

On the first offense, (Level 1 offense) students will be warned, sent home to be properly prepared for school, if possible, or asked to cover the non-complying clothing, and sign a letter to be taken home.  For subsequent offenses, (Level 2 offenses) students will be asked to correct the non-complying clothing. Students will be assigned Saturday School. Third Offense: A level 2 referral is written and the student will be suspended for the day for violating the policy a third time.
