Holmes Middle School provides the curriculum of middle level education and exhibits the true middle school philosophy. The attitude and organization provide a strong academic program that encourages student performance and achievement. All students are required to complete courses in English, social studies, mathematics, and science, which are incorporated into interdisciplinary studies and integrated learning by the use of academic core blocks.

Exploratory courses vary by grade level. The characteristic exploratory courses are art, music, foreign languages, home economics, industrial arts, and physical education. The intent of the exploratory programs is to focus on basic orientation and exposure to curriculum subject areas. Students are prepared for making choices later in their middle school years where more complex courses and projects are offered or when students are committed to a continuous involvement in a particular exploratory curriculum. Elective subjects from which a student may choose are Spanish and French, four levels of band, three levels or orchestra, are, personal resource development, several levels of industrial technology, developmental reading and various choir programs.

Holmes recognizes the dynamics of an American population that is in a constant state of flux, and the school has reached out to students who have special needs. An impressive gifted and talented program emphasizes the academic, creative, leadership and psychomotor/performing art areas. This program challenges students in a manner that a regular classroom situation cannot. Peer support groups and tutoring programs are available to provide a more comfortable forum for the severely and profoundly handicapped students and reach those children whose needs are not met by the regular school curriculum. Holmes' athletic and intramural activities challenge the students to reach physical fitness goals.

Continuing in Holmes' distinctive and educational tradition, the staff encourages each individual to accept responsibility, to strive for excellence in all endeavors and to set goals on a regular basis. Each person in the Holmes community is recognized as an individual. To this end, Holmes Middle School offers the vital resources at its disposal - dynamics in education serving the special needs of the individual.
