The recommended nightly
homework time for academics for each grade level is the following:
6th Grade: 60 minutes
7th Grade: 75 minutes
8th Grade: 90 minutes
This is an average time for homework completion, but the actual time required
may be more or less, depending on the ability of the student. In exploratory
classes, there may be additional homework so students may prepare for tests,
review class notes or textbooks, or to practice their musical instruments. This
time is above and beyond the average stated times listed above for academics.
Parents are encouraged to provide a suitable place for their
child to do his/her homework. The parents and child should decide on a
nightly minimal homework time for the child. Next a definite time for each
night should be designated. Finally, parents should insist that their child
bring home his/her agenda every day. The agenda informs parents daily
about what has gone on in each class, the homework assigned for the following
day and any long-term assignments such as a project.
During the designated time, the child should first do any
assigned homework. If there is no homework to do, the parent should give
him/he some work to do during that homework time. Some alternative assignments
could be to read a book, write a letter to a relative or a friend, read an
article and write a summary of it, or rewrite or review class notes. A
minimum of fifteen minutes a night should be devoted to recreational reading.
