What is Sports Challenge?

Sports Challenge is a School District 11-sponsored after-school program for elementary school students.  The main purpose of Sports Challenge is to allow as many students as possible to participate in extra-curricular athletics which build upon the skills that are learned in Physical Education.  There is an emphasis on sportsmanship, team work, and fun!  There will be approximately nine sports that students can participate in this year.  The cost is $6.00 per sport with a maximum of $36.00 for the year.  Scholarships are available for families who are unable to afford the cost of this program.  Please see Mr. Wilson for more information.

Sports Schedule:

Sports Challenge will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday with grades 1-2 from 2:30-3:30pm (Kindergarteners will participate in selected sports only) and grades 3-5 from 3:40-4:40pm.  This schedule is subject to change depending on the number of participants in Sports Challenge.

*Please note that all dates and activities on this schedule are subject to change.  Advance notice will be provided via the monthly Sports Challenge flyer.

Parents, please be aware that other than Cross-Country and Cupstacking, all competitive games and events will be played at Freedom Elementary.  The goal of the P.E. program and Sports Challenge is inclusiveness.  Therefore, we will not be participating in intramural basketball as only a small fraction of the student body is able to participate.  There are many opportunities in the outside community for those who wish to have a more competitive athletic setting for their student.  Your support of an inclusive athletic environment at Freedom is greatly appreciated.

Sports Challenge T-Shirts Coming Soon!

All students who participate in Sports Challenge will have the opportunity to purchase a Sports Challenge t-shirt to wear to the Cross-Country series and Cupstacking events or to wear for the after school program!  More information on the t-shirts will be provided in the monthly Sports Challenge flyer.

Track and Field

April 16, 2007

Dear Parents,

This will be our last Sports Challenge activity for the year.  Track & Field is open to 1st-5th graders.  In our Track & Field program, students will be participating in relays, races, long jump, and shot put.

The success of the Sports Challenge program has created a high demand and a challenge in providing a safe supervision model for our primary grades.  As a result we will have a lottery system to determine who in the primary grades will be able to participate in the Track and Field program.

The lottery system is for PRIMARY GRADES ONLY.  If your child is in 1st and 2nd grade and would like to participate in the program, please fill out the bottom portion of this paper and send it in to your child’s teacher.  Do not include a payment.  If your child’s name is drawn, payment will be collected at that time.  We will have a drawing for primary grades on April 22nd and you will be notified on April 23rd if your child’s name is drawn.  Payment is due on the 24th if your child’s name is selected.

Intermediate students (3rd, 4th, and 5th) will not have a lottery system and will turn in their slip and money to Mr. Wilson if they want to join the program.

Please take note of the dates for Sports Challenge for May:

April 28th, 29th and May 1st (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday)

May 5th, and 6th (Monday and Tuesday)

May 12th and 13th (Monday and Tuesday)

May 13th is the last day of Sports Challenge

Please contact me at wilsojw@d11.org or 228-0825 with any questions.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jerry Wilson

P.E. Teacher

Please return the bottom portion to Mr. Wilson as soon as possible
