The Results are In!!!

2007  Vote & Be Heard
Annual Student Preference Survey

Each year Colorado Springs School District 11 Food & Nutrition Services participates in a variety of fun and exciting National School Lunch Week (NSLW) activities.  

NSLW is a celebration of the benefits of the National School Lunch Program. This year, NSLW was held from October 15th to October 19th. The theme was Vote For School Lunch. Children across the United States were given the opportunity to vote online for their favorite lunch entrees. Five popular entrée choices were transformed into election candidates.  

ELEMENTARY 

District 11 elementary students had the chance to enjoy tasty meals and cast their vote throughout the first few months of school. During NSLW the nationwide winner was announced. The entrees that were campaigning for votes were:

Patty Mac 'n' Cheese,

Jesse Wrap, 

bullet

Biff Burger, 

bullet

Yumi Rice Bowl, and 

bullet

Pippa Potato.

And the winner is…Biff Burger!  Here are a few of Biff’s outstanding qualities: low in fat (<10 grams of fat), high in fiber (Served on a whole wheat bun) and extremely tasty!  Biff was the overall winner in the state of Colorado as well. The state-by-state results for Colorado were as follows:

SECONDARY

Our secondary students had an opportunity to vote for their favorites as well. Although these are not listed on the National Vote for Lunch, the secondary student input is very important to us. We use this information in preparing our menus.

For Breakfast their favorites are:

3 Pancakes 4 Biscuit and Gravy
5 French Toast 6 Breakfast Burrito
7 English Muffin Sandwich 8 Waffles
9 Bagel Sandwich 10 Breakfast Pizza
11 Sausage Biscuit 12 Bagel with Cream Cheese

Their favorites for Lunch are:

3 Pretzel With Cheese Sauce 4 Burrito
5 Country fried Steak 6 Pancake Bar
7 Macaroni and Cheese 8 Sweet & Sour Chicken
9 Salisbury Steak 10 Baked Chicken
11 Chicken & Noodle 12 Chili Dog
13 Sloppy Joe 14 Corn Dog
15 Crispito 16 Meatball Sub

Vote For School Lunch was a great way to get kids involved in the voting process. It also demonstrated that school lunches can be kids’ favorite dishes and be nutritionally prepared at the same time!
