| | CSSD11 Food & Nutrition Services procedure for Accommodating
Children with Special Dietary Needs
Here
are some facts from the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network:
 | Scientists
report an increase in food allergies during the past decade. In particular,
peanut allergy among young children doubled between 1997 and 2002.
|
 | Food
allergy is the leading cause of anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction)
outside the hospital setting
|
 | Eight
foods account for 90 percent of all reactions in the
U.S.
: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios,
pecans, etc.), wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish.
|
 | Food
allergies result in 30,000 emergency room visits annually and 150 to 200
deaths.
|
 | 12
million Americans have food allergies.
|
 | There
is no cure for a food allergy; only strict food avoidance can prevent a
reaction.
|
 | One
in every 17 children under the age of 3 has a food allergy.

Ingredients Disclaimer
We are a food service provider. We cannot be held responsible for the accuracy
of ingredient or nutritional information we provide nor liable for any adverse
reactions caused by the products we sell or serve.
Our goal is to help parents/guardians and students with dietary restrictions
find foods they can eat in District 11 School Meal Programs. We thoroughly
research each product with its manufacturer to determine which dietary
categories to apply in our database. When supporting details are available, we
provide them in the "Ingredients" information section below for each product. We
make a judgement call for various allergens based on allergen "aliases."
However, manufacturers may change ingredients or production practices without
our knowledge. If you have severe food sensitivities or allergies, you should
always contact the manufacturer directly to confirm the safety of the product
for your situation.
We are constantly in the process of researching, categorizing, detailing, and
updating ingredient information. If you discover an error or incomplete
information about a product on this website, please tell us about it by emailing
Rick.Hughes@d11.org.
Please contact our office at (719) 520-2924 if you have any questions or
concerns about your student and special dietary needs or food allergies.
