School District 11
Meal Charge Policy

Effective: August 1, 2001

ALL Schools:  Meal charges are NOT allowed.

bulletElementary Students who do not have enough money on their account for a meal will have their meal ID Card or ticket "pulled" at the cafeteria before they arrive for breakfast or lunch. Students whose ticket or meal ID is not in the "normal" place (e.g. card rack, classroom ticket pack, etc.) will know that there is an issue and he/she will go see the Cafeteria Manager for assistance. And,
bulletStudents who work in the kitchen are provided a meal at no cost. Students who forget their meal money may work in the kitchen. Or,
bulletSchools or local school organizations (e.g. PTA, student clubs, etc.) may purchase a prepaid meal ticket that would be provided to students on the day that they forget their money.
bulletStudents who forget their money are provided an Alternate Meal on a case by case basis.
bulletAdults are not allowed to charge meals or ala carte purchases.

Prevention:

The new Electronic Point of Sale system will allow the Kitchen Manager to generate Low Balance Warning letters, at Elementary Schools only, to send home to parents at any "user-defined" level. The electronic POS will enable FNS to proactively manage the meal accounting process, keeping staff, management, and parents informed.

If behavior patterns develop with students who consistently do not have money for meals, the Cafeteria Manager will discuss this problem with the principal, counselor, student, or parent to determine the best solution for the student.
