El Paso County Healthier Schools Initiative
Concern is growing in El Paso County and nationally about increases in child and adult health issues related to poor nutrition and lack of physical activity. Specifically, the rates of chronic illnesses, such as obesity and diabetes are on the rise among children and adults. Working together, schools and health agencies can make a difference—in helping students learn and practice healthy eating habits, and in providing the knowledge, motivation, and skills that children need for lifelong physical activity. From a health perspective, the problem is clear: According to the American Obesity Association and the Centers for Disease Control, over 15 percent of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are obese. Childhood obesity and its consequences, including early heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes, have spiraled into a nationwide epidemic. Some scientists believe this may be the first generation in America in which many parents outlive their children. Good nutrition and physical activity influence more than physical health. In fact, many studies have documented that when children’s basic nutritional and fitness needs are met, they do better in school, both academically and in terms of behavior. As members of the El Paso County Healthier Schools Initiative, school and health representatives from throughout the Pikes Peak Region are advocating for education within the regular school day that supports good nutrition and physical activity. A series of professional development opportunities are planned during the 2007-08 school year. These events are targeted toward school staff members to help them incorporate health and wellness topics into everyday activities and programs. See attached flyer for details. Join us as we build a healthier, more active El Paso County!
