District 11 Provides Leadership in Community and District Partnerships via Teaching American History (TAH) Grant Award
District 11 applied for and received one of the Teaching American History (TAH) Grants funded by the Federal Government (commonly referred to as the Senator Robert Byrd Grant). District 11 formed a consortium with five other El Paso County school districts, and a variety of community partners including Colorado College’s Tutt Library, Pikes Peak Library District and the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum, to write a winning grant proposal that will provide the consortium with $994,436 over the next three years.

The purpose of the grant is to increase the instructional skills of American History teachers, as they create and digitally archive lessons about local historical events that are of national significance. The grant funds will be used to train 120 of our local seven through twelfth grade history teachers in order to increase teachers’ U.S. history knowledge, teaching skills, including improving student reading abilities, and increasing student interest in U.S. History. At the end of the project, the digitally archived lessons of the Pikes Peak region will be shared with the teachers and students across the United States.

The six Teaching American History consortium school districts include 146 schools, 4,739 teachers, and 82,167 students. The other school districts who join with us are: Harrison School District #2, Fountain-Fort Carson School District #8, Manitou Springs School District #14, Academy School District #20, and Falcon School District #49. Colorado Springs School District 11 is the lead district in the project and the district of record for funding. Read the full Press Release.

What We Believe

Vision and Mission: Office of Special Programs and Grants exists to provide resource development to support educational programs that will increase student achievement.

Resource development often makes the critical difference for schools, departments and programs to achieve the district’s instructional goals. The term "resource development" refers to all efforts to secure any resource outside of the District’s General Fund Budget – grants; gifts and donations; in-kind support (e.g., volunteer recruitment and equipment donations); and community partnerships and collaborative agreements. All resource development efforts at both school and District level should be focused and coordinated to achieve District goals listed below.

  1. Student achievement/student success and literacy in a standards-based system

  2. School/community partnerships and parent involvement

  3. Research based interventions that support student achievement

The Office of Special Programs and Grants created the Grant Resource Manual to facilitate and coordinate the process of resource development for all programs of Colorado Springs District 11 (D-11). The purpose of the manual is three-fold:

  1. To help D-11 schools, classrooms, departments, and programs successfully develop and leverage resources to support and enhance programs in all areas of pre-K grade 12 education.

  2. To encourage positive and supportive school/community/business partnerships that provides resources for student achievement and success.

  3. To simplify the grant process for teachers and administrators by offering "customer focused service" through the Grants office.
