Grade 6, August Unit (@ 10 days)

Overview
During the first two weeks, 6th graders will add and subtract decimals to solve real world problems. You will investigate different ways to write the same number while locating others on a number line. Pay close attention to the Essential Questions. You may be asked to answer the questions at the end of this unit.

Standards

Enduring Understanding

  • Numbers can be represented, ordered, and communicated in many different forms.

  • Numbers have properties.

  • Solutions must be reasonable.

  • Computation is a vital mathematical tool.

  • There are different ways of estimating.

  • Computation and reasoning are a vital mathematical tools.

Essential Questions

  • How do you demonstrate equivalent numbers using various forms?

  • Why do we need to represent, order, and communicate numbers?

  • When and how should you use a number line?

  • How are the properties of numbers similar to the rules of a game?

  • When is the "correct" answer not the best solution?

  • When would you use addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals in real world situations?

  • How do you select, apply, and explain the strategies chosen to solve a problem involving fractions and decimals?

  • How can you demonstrate math computations with whole numbers?

  • How do you select, apply, and explain which technique to use when estimating?

  • How do you select and apply computational methods to solve a problem?

  • How do you justify your solution as reasonable?

Standards: Highest Frequency High Frequency Other Standards and E-Skills

Standard 1:  (Number Sense)  Students develop number sense and use numbers and number relationships in problem solving situations and communicate the reasoning in solving these problems.
Represent and use fractions, decimals, and percents in a variety of models and then write the equivalencies for each model
Convert positive rational numbers into equivalent fractions, decimals and percents
Read, write, order, and compare common fractions, decimals, and percents.
Locate positive rational numbers on a number line.
Use number sense to achieve a reasonable solution

Standard 6: (Computation) Students link concepts and procedures as they develop and use computational techniques, including estimation, mental arithmetic, paper-and-pencil, calculators, and computers, in problem-solving situations and communicate the reasoning involve
Compute with whole numbers.
Add and subtract decimals in problem solving situations
Apply appropriate computational methods to solve a problem.
Apply computational skills to find reasonable answers
