Grade 2: August Unit
Counting, Coins, and Computation
(@10 days)

Overview
Video introduction. August in Second Grade focuses on learning critical mathematics skills and includes lessons that focus on number sense, computation, time, and patterns. Second graders will experience math number activities using numbers to and beyond 100, number patterns, place value, adding and subtracting coin and number combinations including story problems, and even and odd numbers. Students will better understand counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, place value for ones and tens, reviewing odd/even numbers to 10, coin combinations to $1.00, and addition/subtraction facts to 20 including doubles.

Standards

Enduring Understandings are important ideas that students should carry with them years beyond the instruction received this year.

  •  Number fluency leads to ease of adding and subtracting in the context of real life situations.

Essential Questions are most important “big picture” questions students should be able to answer after completing learning activities.

  • When is a 2 not just worth 2? What can you say about a 4 in the tens place?

  • Can you figure out the value of the coins in your mom’s purse, your dad’s pocket, or your own piggy bank?

  • Can you tell time in more than one way? Can you talk about that?

  • What patterns are in the number combinations to 10 and 20?

CSAP Tested Standards  Highest Frequency High Frequency Other Standards and E-Skills

Highest Frequency = the timing, intensity and level of accountability is extremely high because mastery of these skills will must be demonstrated at this grade level.
High Frequency = the timing, intensity and level of accountability is high because mastery of these skills is expected at this grade level.
Other Standards and E-Skills = the timing, intensity, and level of mastery are not urgent. It should be introduced during this time so students can experience the concept and return in future quarters to strive towards mastery.

Parents

Math conversations at home can build your child's confidence with numbers. Talk about doubles of numbers in practical ways; five fingers on one hand and five fingers on the other hand make ten fingers altogether; two arms and two legs make four limbs; three leaves on a clover and another three leaves make six leaves. Talk about what makes numbers odd or even. Skip count by 2's, 5's, and 10's to 100 as you drive in the car or walk to school. These simple activities will strengthen your child's understanding of important math concepts without expense or resistance, and it will be fun!
