Enduring Understandings
are important ideas that students should carry with them years beyond the
instruction received this year.
Essential Questions
are most important “big picture” questions students should be able to answer
after completing learning activities.
-
When is a 2 not
just worth 2? What can you say about a 4 in the tens place?
-
Can you figure
out the value of the coins in your mom’s purse, your dad’s pocket,
or your own piggy bank?
-
Can you tell time
in more than one way? Can you talk about that?
-
What patterns are
in the number combinations to 10 and 20?

Parents
Math conversations at home can build your child's confidence with numbers.
Talk about doubles of numbers in practical ways; five fingers on one hand
and five fingers on the other hand make ten fingers altogether; two arms and
two legs make four limbs; three leaves on a clover and another three leaves
make six leaves. Talk about what makes numbers odd or even. Skip count by
2's, 5's, and 10's to 100 as you drive in the car or walk to school. These
simple activities will strengthen your child's understanding of important
math concepts without expense or resistance, and it will be fun!
