District 11 Educational Support Services
Literacy Resource Teachers

                        Welcome

Literacy Resource Teachers / Standards Coaches
This site will serve as a focal point to support the work of Literacy Resource Teachers in District 11. Click here for a roster of Literacy Resource Teachers
As outlined in the Literacy Resource Teacher Reference Guide, LRTs serve three main functions in their schools: standards-based coaching, assessment data interpretation and use, and school leadership. The structure of this website is organized around these three functions, vital to the work we do to develop effective literacy instruction throughout the district.

~ Vince Puzick, K-12 Literacy & Language Arts Coordinator  puzicvb@d11.org

"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity.

For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right. ... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.”  ~ Kofi Annan Diplomat, Seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, 2001 Nobel Peace Prize Winner

 Girl Reading Art Print by Jean-Honoré Fragonard

"Literacy is not a luxury; it is a right and a responsibility. If our world is to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century we must harness the energy and creativity of all our citizens."
~ President Clinton on International Literacy Day, September 8, 1994

"American schools need to need to enhance the ability of children to search and sort through information, to synthesize and analyze the information they encounter."  ~ Richard Arlington,
Pres. of International Reading Association for 2005-2006

"LITERACY COACHING is most effective when it begins with teachers’ interests, needs, and concerns; therefore, literacy coaches are wise to develop the habit of listening and learning before all else." -- Cathy Toll cited on Literacy Coaching Clearinghouse http://www.literacycoachingonline.org/

What We Believe

Vision

Literacy Resource Teachers/Standards Coaches will work within the learning community to maximize each member’s positive influence on student achievement.

Mission

Our mission is to increase student achievement by

  • Fostering teaching excellence through effective and aligned professional development and

  • Collaborating with members of the learning community to implement standards-based scientifically researched best instructional practices.

Guiding Principles

We believe:

  • All students can learn and deserve excellent instruction and

  • Effective teachers positively impact student achievement.

We:

  • Demonstrate respect toward each individual personally and professionally;

  • Are committed to Cognitive Coaching to empower teachers;

  • Value collaboration with peers;

  • Value partnership among parents, students, staff and the community; and

  • Participate in open and honest communication.

 We can increase teacher effectiveness by supporting:

  • Continuous growth;

  • Professional dialogue;

  • Understanding and implementation of best practices;

  • Efficacy; and

  • Interdependence.

Standards-Based Coaching

The Colorado Reading and Writing Standards express what Colorado students should know and be able to do

  • to become fluent readers, writers, and speakers;
  • be able to communicate effectively, concisely, coherently, and imaginatively;
  • recognize the power of language and use that power ethically and creatively; and
  • be at ease communicating in an increasingly technological world.

LRTs will assist, advise and provide support for teachers and principals in implementing reading and writing across the curriculum for every student and in every classroom (cognitive coach).  They will support teacher implementation of interdisciplinary, cross-content strategies and the use of materials in support of Standards Based Instruction.  The Literacy Coach Clearinghouse's "mission is to increase the knowledge base, research, and practice of literacy coaching."  The site is supported by both the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the International Reading Association (IRA).

School Leadership

LRTs will serve as a part of the Division of Instruction Literacy Resource Team by providing ongoing professional development and support at individual school sites. They will

  • Provide support to administration in meeting district and state expectations for Literacy compliance in all content areas.

  • Serve as members of Building Leadership Teams and Goal Teams offering expertise in Literacy and Standards.

  • Support the development, implementation, and quarterly revisions of School Improvement Plan-SIP.

  • Serve as liaison between building and district in the areas of Literacy and Standards Based Instruction.

  • Coordinate and implement professional development and related follow-up activities for staff as well as provide professional support, embedded professional development, and on-site coaching.

  • Provide staff with assistance in selecting appropriate instructional materials with follow-up professional development and support needed for implementation.

A useful resource for understanding educational leadership is McREL's Balanced Leadership "working paper" co-authored by Waters, Marzano, and McNulty.

High Performance in High Poverty Schools: 90/90/90 and A Summary of the Work Developed by Douglas Reeves

The 10 Extra Day Form is required to be filled out by all LRTs.
