District 11 Educational Support Services
Literacy Resource Teachers

Welcome

Literacy Resource Teachers / Standards Coaches
This site will serve as a focal point to support the work of Literacy Resource Teachers in District 11. As outlined in the Literacy Resource Teacher Reference Guide, LRTs serve three main functions in their schools: standards-based coaching, assessment data interpretation and use, and school leadership. The structure of this website is organized around these three functions, vital to the work we do to develop effective literacy instruction throughout the district.
~ Vince Puzick, K-12 Literacy & Language Arts Coordinator  puzicvb@d11.org

"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity.

For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right. ... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.”  ~ Kofi Annan Diplomat, Seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, 2001 Nobel Peace Prize Winner

"Literacy is not a luxury; it is a right and a responsibility. If our world is to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century we must harness the energy and creativity of all our citizens."
~ President Clinton on International Literacy Day, September 8, 1994

"American schools need to need to enhance the ability of children to search and sort through information, to synthesize and analyze the information they encounter."  ~ Richard Arlington,
Pres. of International Reading Association for 2005-2006

"LITERACY COACHING is most effective when it begins with teachers’ interests, needs, and concerns; therefore, literacy coaches are wise to develop the habit of listening and learning before all else." -- Cathy Toll cited on Literacy Coaching Clearinghouse http://www.literacycoachingonline.org/

What We Believe

Vision

Literacy Resource Teachers/Standards Coaches will work within the learning community to maximize each member’s positive influence on student achievement.

Mission

Our mission is to increase student achievement by

  • Fostering teaching excellence through effective and aligned professional development and

  • Collaborating with members of the learning community to implement standards-based scientifically researched best instructional practices.

Guiding Principles

We believe:

  • All students can learn and deserve excellent instruction and

  • Effective teachers positively impact student achievement.

We:

  • Demonstrate respect toward each individual personally and professionally;

  • Are committed to Cognitive Coaching to empower teachers;

  • Value collaboration with peers;

  • Value partnership among parents, students, staff and the community; and

  • Participate in open and honest communication.

 We can increase teacher effectiveness by supporting:

  • Continuous growth;

  • Professional dialogue;

  • Understanding and implementation of best practices;

  • Efficacy; and

  • Interdependence.

Standards-Based Coaching

The Colorado Reading and Writing Standards express what Colorado students should know and be able to do

  • to become fluent readers, writers, and speakers;
  • be able to communicate effectively, concisely, coherently, and imaginatively;
  • recognize the power of language and use that power ethically and creatively; and
  • be at ease communicating in an increasingly technological world.

LRTs will assist, advise and provide support for teachers and principals in implementing reading and writing across the curriculum for every student and in every classroom (cognitive coach).  They will support teacher implementation of interdisciplinary, cross-content strategies and the use of materials in support of Standards Based Instruction.  The Literacy Coach Clearinghouse's "mission is to increase the knowledge base, research, and practice of literacy coaching."  The site is supported by both the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the International Reading Association (IRA).

Useful sites for supporting teachers' standards-based literacy instruction can be found at these sites:

Schools of California Online Resources for Educators offers a look at California's aligned curriculum. See "In the Classroom" for their Phonics Link (which has activities for phoneme awareness, phonics, and vocabulary),  and "The Activity Bank" which offers activities for journaling, graphic organizers, and rubrics).  (ES, MS, HS)

Just Read Now - a Florida-based website that contains effective strategies that will engage students and encourage them to become active participants in the reading process. (ES, MS, HS). Guide to Grammar and Writing and The Principles of Composition offer useful materials on grammar; word, sentence and paragraph level constructions; essay structures and organizational pattern.  Teachers may want to use this as an extension of classroom instruction to reinforce skills around grammar and usage.  (MS, HS)
Learning Disabilities and ADHD - powerful resources and research addressing reading research and strategies for  students with ADHD. Resources within this section provide information and advice on what parents and educators can do to help students with LD gain reading skills.  (ES, MS, HS) Writing in Rutgers Education: Offers terrific information on the writing instruction and the writing process.  (MS, HS).
The English Companion - a very comprehensive website supporting teachers at all levels. The "Featured Links" column on the right-hand side of the website is most valuable.  My favorite section is The Weekly Reader.  National Center for the Study of Adult Literacy and Learning (HS and Alternative Schools).  This issue focuses on Writing Instruction.

TOWRE - Test of Word Reading Efficiency is used at the middle school level to measure a student's word reading accuracy and fluency.  "This test takes only about 2 minutes to give, and provides a reliable index of word reading accuracy and fluency. If a child who has obtained an unsatisfactory score on a “high stakes” measure of reading comprehension obtains a score above the 39th percentile on this test, it is not likely that word reading difficulties are a significant problem, and remedial instruction can focus elsewhere."  See "Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties Following Inadequate Performance on State Level Reading Outcome Measures" for additional information on using the TOWRE assessment.

Alpine Achievement supports our work with Individual Literacy Plans.  In addition to literacy and other assessment data that can be found there, the site also offers useful documents for interpreting RIT and Lexile data from MAP.  You can also get directly to those documents from here by clicking on the desired document:

NWEA MAP is administered school-wide at the beginning and end of the year.  It may also be administered at mid-year to students on ILPs as a mid-year benchmark assessment.

  • MAP/CSAP Predictor.
  • Both MAP and SRI use the Lexile framework to determine reading level.

    Benefits of Using Lexile Measures

    • Facilitates selection of appropriate reading materials for students and classes

    • Enables teachers and librarians to track and assist students in their choices of challenging reading matter

    • Allows teachers to tailor curriculum to meet students' needs

    • Increases performance in reading and other subject areas
