Kindergarten

Welcome

"We are committed to partnering with parents and guardians to make the time your child spends in Kindergarten a positive and nurturing learning experience. Some parents prefer a half-day Kindergarten while others prefer a full-day. In District 11, we offer both. Please contact me for more information about the choice in kindergarten programs, or you may contact the principal at your local school."

“We’ve always wanted full-day kindergarten. We’re from Holland, where all kindergarten is full time, and the result is better education for students.”
~ Karin Van Herk

“Our son is almost 6, so he’s older than many of his classmates. We believe he’s ready for more of a challenge with full-day kindergarten.”
~ Parent Roxann Parker

"Our daughter went to a Montessori preschool ... We believe that full-day kindergarten is a better transition for our daughter to first grade.”
~ Parent Teresa Barnes

“Jared is excited because he’ll be going to a ' big school' with the same hours as his older brother. He is excited and feels good about himself.”
~Parent Roxann Parker

We have a lot of friends in other states where they have full-day kindergarten. Kids learn more and are better-prepared for first grade.”

What We Believe

Success Builds Success - Full Day Kindergarten provides benefits:

  • More time to address State/ District academic standards
  • More individual attention for kids
  • Fewer transitions, less stress
  • Relaxed, orderly pace

Morning or afternoon kindergartens are beloved traditions of public school education. For some families, School District 11’s state-funded half-day kindergarten program remains the right choice. Yet many families want more time, and District 11’s full-day, tuition-free kindergarten offers more of a great thing! Full-day kindergartners benefit from more time to begin learning to read and write, to explore learning activities of all kinds, and to develop all-important academic and social skills.

Learning Success
Full-day kindergartners have more time with their teachers, more individual attention and small-group learning. Full-day programs give students more time to become proficient readers and writers. There's also more time for other subjects, such as science, math, art and physical education.

Growth Success
Full-day kindergartners are typically more independent learners. They participate more in the classroom and are more comfortable asking questions and seeking help from their teachers. Full-day kindergartners shine when it comes to relationship building, developing better-than-average social skills with their peers.

One-on-One Success
An extended kindergarten day gives teachers more time for small-group and individual learning. There's more time to assess and assist children at all developmental levels: under-performing students grow their skills more quickly and higher level students get the challenges they need.

Success Through Continuity
Full-day kindergarten also means less change, fewer transitions from one setting to another during the school day. When combined with the before- and after-care available at many school sites, children are able to settle into a comfortable environment from the time they're dropped off in the morning until you come to pick them up in the afternoon.
