Overview                                                                              
What American can’t sing the tune, “Take me out to the ballpark, take me out to the game…?”  You are most likely singing this popular tune in your head as you read.  There is a lot to say about a sport that inspired an all time favorite song!  Whether it is baseball or softball, games implementing the use of sticks and balls have been existence since the beginning of time.  In Colorado Springs School District 11 Physical Education classes you will be given the opportunity to refine your skills, advance your strategic and situational play, and learn the skills in officiating, while you are developing cooperation and teamwork.

Standards

Enduring Understandings - important ideas that students should carry with them years beyond the instruction received this year.

  • A complete fitness program promotes participation in grade level skills and activities that build health and wellness including cardiovascular, flexibility, body composition, muscular strength and endurance, and lifetime activity.

  • How do class rules and team rules help make competitive sports and individual sports more enjoyable?

  • How does cooperation in games impact the final outcome?

Standards

Standard 1: Demonstrates skills in a variety of activities
Benchmark: Loco motor, non-loco motor, manipulative skill development and movement
District Indicator: Repeatedly performs loco motor, non-loco motor, and manipulative skills in isolation and combination

Standard 2: Exhibits components of physical fitness
District Indicator: Demonstrates cardiovascular endurance
District Indicator: Demonstrates flexibility
District Indicator: Demonstrates muscular strength and endurance

Essential Skills/Indicators:

  • Is able to throw a softball accurately a minimum of 60 feet

  • Is able to catch a softball thrown to a target

  • Can run the bases

  • Can stop ground balls

  • Can catch pop-ups within a four-step radius

  • Has learned and can assume responsibility for one defensive position

  • Has learned softball rules

  • Hs learned the batter’s stance and how to swing and meet the ball

  • Can identify the strike zone

  • Is able to exhibit good sporting behavior

  • Can play without endangering the safety of others
