Grade  3 - 5, Track and Field Unit

Overview

Running, jumping, throwing, and sprinting are all skills that come natural to children. The Track & Field Unit is one of the most popular units in the curriculum because of all the different events that students can participate in. The relay events not only require skill in the art of running, but a relay member must be able to communicate, cooperate, and be a good team member. Every year each school has a traditional Track & Field Day or a Field Day which students participate in a variety of cooperative games and individual or team activities. Track & Field is called Athletics in many countries and is one of the oldest sports that is traced back to 776 B C. in Olympia, Greece. The first 13 Olympic Games featured only one event a foot race that was 200 meters. The summer Olympics takes place every four years and is rotated to different countries. This year the Summer Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China.
