Components of a Successful Web Site

Learn how to choose a domain name, a Web developer or designer and a Web hosting company. Understand how to plan your site so that it reflects the goals, look and features that are important to you. This certified Web master will teach you how to create your copy so that search engines locate your site. You will gain skills that enable you to maintain your site. Pay the instructor  $5 for materials.

Computer Novice I
Directed at the new computer user, this class provides a basic understanding of Microsoft’s Windows 2000 operating system to include system hardware and software. Topics include the desktop, parts of the window, moving and sizing windows, My Documents and My Computer, files, folders, drives, data storage, file maintenance, and an overview of computer parts and peripherals, such as printers. This class is strong on computer terminology associated with the use of Microsoft products and helps the student to learn the difference between the operating system and applications. This class also provides a basic understanding of the Internet. Topics include modems (56k, DSL, and cable), Web browsers (Internet Explorer and Netscape), Internet service providers, surfing strategies, secure transactions, cookies, anti-virus software and firewalls.

Computer Novice II
This course follows Computer Novice I. It covers the basic use of Microsoft (MS) Word, Excel, and PowerPoint utilizing Office 2000. MS Word covers creating, saving, and finding files; working with menus and toolbars, inserting text, basic formatting, drawing objects, and many other topics essential in the day-to-day use. MS Excel includes a basic understanding of Excel 2000, Microsoft’s powerful spreadsheet application. Areas discussed include the Excel 2000 environment, entering and editing data, using simple formulas, using functions, formatting text and numbers, working with multiple worksheets, creating charts, and printing spreadsheets. MS PowerPoint provides a solid foundation for using Power Point 2000, Microsoft’s presentation application. Topics include creating a presentation, inserting objects and hyperlinks, adding animation and many other subjects essential in the use of PowerPoint 2000. $69+materials/6 sessions; Limit: 15 (max.), 8 (min.)

Basic Culinary Knife Skills
Students will learn how to identify and properly use various knives for different jobs and receive tips from the chef on what to purchase for your own kitchen. In class, you will learn how to slice, dice and chop to prepare a variety of fruits and vegetables for different applications. Take home a fresh veggie tray and fruit tray. You will also learn how to create decorative garnishes of fruits and vegetables to adorn your other foods. Pay the instructor $8 for food and handouts. Bring containers.

Foundation Piecing for Quilts
Have you ever wanted to make a quilt, but were daunted by the intricate patterns? Perhaps you are a more experienced quilter who wants to learn a new technique?  This class will cover the basics of “foundation piecing”, also known as “paper piecing.” This technique uses only straight stitching and assures accurate seams and perfect placement for many quilt block designs. We will also troubleshoot problems you have with your "homework", and you will learn how to design your own foundation pieced blocks for a truly unique and creative experience. Bringing a sewing machine is optional. Pay the instructor $10 for supplies and handouts.

Mah Jongg for Beginners
This ancient Chinese game is enjoying an upsurge in popularity. This class will teach you the national Mah Jongg League rules. The League prints a card that contains all you need to know, and it’s placed in front of every player during the game. There is no memory work! Your instructor will provide all materials for you to learn the suits and basic strategy, and give you hints on what to look for when purchasing your own game.

Medieval English Swordplay, Beginning
Are you intrigued by the quick moves and fancy footwork of the medieval swordsmen? This course is designed to teach the rudiments of medieval English fencing including the major guards, attacks, mutation of attacks and traditional practice routines. Wear athletic shoes and loose-fitting, comfortable clothing appropriate for exercise.  Kneepads, elbow pads and heavy gloves recommended. Wooden practice swords will be provided.

Strategies for Getting Out of Debt
Is your paycheck gone before you get it?  There are a number of resources available to you that provide strategies and tips for getting out of credit card and other debt.  Many times, people just don’t know where to begin.  The instructor will give you simple ways to get started, and procedures for becoming completely debt free—without credit counseling or debt-management services.  Information and a list of resources will be provided.  YOU CAN DO THIS!  Bring a list of your debt amounts to class for working into a formula (no one except you will see this) and a calculator.  Pay instructor $5 for supplies.

Watercolor, Beginning I
This class is a fun and understandable introduction for those with little or no experience painting with watercolor.  The instructor will cover materials to use, color concepts, tips for designing a scene, drawing and simple perspective skills. The class will show how watercolor can be a satisfying and enjoyable pastime.  Significant time will be allocated each session for students to practice. A supply list will be provided. Beginning Spanish for School Personnel
In this class students will learn beginning Spanish skills that will get them prepared for the Spanish for School Personnel I class. Participants will be exposed to Spanish vocabulary, grammar, verb conjugation, and conversational words, questions and phrases. Participants will also study the various cultures of Spanish-speaking families in District 11. Students who wish to get CDE licensure/increment credit must meet all course requirements and bring an additional $50 check made payable to the D-11 In-service Office on the first day of class. Pay the instructor $7 for materials.

If your desired class is full, you will have the option to have your name placed on a waiting list.  

Cancellations and Refunds
You will be notified if a class is cancelled, and you will have the option of:
    Enrolling in another activity.
    A full refund will be given when a request for a refund is made before first class.
    A refund of 75% of the class fee will be given if the request is made after the first session. 

    No refunds will be given after the second class session.
    Please allow three to four weeks for the refund to be processed.

    Class instructors, dates, fees, and location are subject to change.
