Concept or Proposal
(This is a learning simulation designed for district 11 students
only.)
Colorado Springs School District 11 is looking for graphic designers
that will illustrate courses, lessons or units in the District’s online
curriculum. The graphics will be posted to the Internet and will include
credits to the graphic artist or designer. Graphics will be evaluated by
the following criteria.
Requirements for Graphic: (total of 30 pts.)
1. Sample graphics must be submitted as .jpg files 200 pixels wide by
1000 pixels long. (2 pts.)
2. Graphics must
coordinate with the color scheme of the chosen District 11 online
curriculum page. (6 pts.)
3. Graphics should enhance and support the content or text on the page
just as magazine and web page graphics provide visual representation
that supports the text. (6 pts.)
4. Graphics should
include eye-catching images and text. (additional requirements may be
added by your art teacher, i.e. layers, textures, drop shadows, etc.)
(10 pts.)
5. Graphics should
be age appropriate to appeal to the target audience. (6 pts.)

The graphic should be included as part of a portfolio including the
following:

Cover letter
including qualifications, art experience or accomplishments and
references - Write an introductory cover letter in Microsoft Word
that uses a formal business letter format. Include a list of your
artistic accomplishments or experiences and include fictitious
reference information in a table for at least 3 references.

Page describing
how original graphics were acquired and any relevant copyright
information. - Document the original source of any graphics you use
in your Photoshop Graphic Montage. Explain in your proposal if the
graphics are free public domain graphics, useable with source
citation, or royalty free purchased images. If you use a purchased
image, be sure to include in your budget proposal the original cost
and any recurring annual fees if required.

Budget proposal
including hour rate for creating additional graphics - Keep track of
how long it takes to create the graphic. Add the time you spend to
the Excel file and determine how much per hour you would need to
bill the customer. Investigate typical hourly rates for graphic
design based on internet resources. Justify your proposed hourly
rate based on your research. Add additional services you could
provide in order to build a budget to submit with your proposal. For
example, you might choose to offer _____________. Your excel
document must include 2 formulas: a sum function showing a total for
several services, and a multiplication function that automatically
calculates a total based on the number of hours input.

Include in your
Portfolio a PowerPoint presentation that could be used if you were
invited to present your proposal to the customers in a formal
presentation. Use the following format:
Title Slide - Graphic Art Proposal from Your Company Name, Your name
and contact information.
Slide 2 - Brief description of your accomplishments or experiences
Slide 3 - What “fictitious” references have to say about your work
Slide 4 - include a reduced image of your Photoshop graphic saved as
a jpg file. Link the file to a full size image of the file.
Slide 5 - a brief explanation of the proposed cost per graphic.
Include your hourly rate and any additional costs or services you
could provide. This slide should include a link to the Excel file
with your actual budget proposal.
Turn in your
portfolio to your art teacher by the due date. It will be forwarded to
the District 11 Curriculum & Instruction Department. Your portfolio will
be graded and your sample graphic will be judged for placement on the
District 11 Online Curriculum.
Your portfolio should include:

Printed and
electronic copy of your graphic (30 points)

electronic copy of your cover letter (15 points)

Printed and
electronic copy of your budget proposal in Excel (20 points)

Printed and
electronic copy of your source citation for graphics. (15 points)

Electronic copy
of your PowerPoint presentation and printed copies in slide format
with 3 slides per page. (20 points)
You will receive a
computer credit if your composite score is at least 80 out of a possible
100 points according to the scoring rubrics or checklist for each piece
of the portfolio. |
