Solo and Ensemble Festival

Colorado Springs School District 11 focuses on authentic performance assessments for its music experiences. Teachers use scoring rubrics designed by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) that are found in the CHSAA Music Handbook. Students across the district participate in individual and small ensemble (two to sixteen students) assessments at the CHSAA Solo and Ensemble festivals and large group assessments (sixteen or more students) are provided at the CHSAA Large Group festivals. Teachers are encouraged to utilize similar formative scoring rubric assessments to give students feedback on their solo and ensemble experiences and to inform their own delivery of instruction.
 
COLORADO HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION The CHSAA is an association of 332 member schools created to promote participation, provide for fair and safe play in athletic and non-athletic programs, and to support the academic mission of its member schools. Its music activities are conducted in solo & ensemble and large group festivals at sites across Colorado. The solo & ensemble festivals take place from February 1 through the first weekend in May, while its large group events are held over 20-plus days at 19 regional sites across the state. Last year, nearly 25,000 students participated in music events sponsored by the CHSAA. Overall, nearly 37,000 Students participate in music programs, both vocal and instrumental, across the state making it the largest activity sanctioned by the CHSAA. The Association has been an active participant and supporter of the music community with support in the area of educationally-based performance events and legislative initiatives.
