Teaching Vocabulary

Overview
View the video introduction on Marzano's Six Step Strategies. Does teaching specific vocabulary really make a difference in student achievement? According to research by Bob Marzano, it definitely does! However, assigning lists of terms and definitions to be memorized is definitely NOT an effective way to teach vocabulary, even though this common practice can be seen in classrooms all across the country. Research-based strategies for increasing student vocabulary make the difference. They have been archived here along with professional development information and Academic Word Lists developed by District 11 teachers. These Word Lists are aligned to state standards and have also been aligned across disciplines.

Vocabulary Instruction Process and Activities Steps 1-3

Visual Thesaurus is an excellent tool for helping students with steps 1-3. D11 students and staff should use the appropriate log-in and password for access.  To log on to your D11 Visual Thesaurus account, please click on your grade level below:

Some interesting resources on Visual Thesaurus for vocabulary instruction:

  • Vocabulary OUT LOUD:  A text rendering activity using VT to hear pronunciations.
  • RTI and taking Vocabulary Personally:  "Systematically and consistently asking students to take that extra step in vocabulary learning, to connect new words to their personal experiences and through different modes of communication, are key ingredients for mastering words on a deeper level."

If you have not yet had a D11 account started, or if you need help, please email Vince Puzick, K-12 Literacy and Language Arts Facilitator.

Another powerful resource for Steps 1-3 is wordsift -- which incorporates both google images and Visual Thesaurus as you work with specific texts that you cut and paste or type in.

"According to several research projects, when educators teach specific academic vocabulary and vocabulary development, students show substantial gains in vocabulary and comprehension. Unfortunately, many educators give little emphasis on the intentional acquisition of vocabulary.  District 11 teachers and Literacy Resource Teachers have identified the key vocabulary for each grade level and content area listed here. The strategies included here fit within a comprehensive literacy plan for students in grades K-12."
