Doherty Joins International Coast Clean Up

Forty-nine Doherty oceanography students and 6 adults joined the International Beach Clean Up project on Friday, October 3rd. The group gathered 97.71 pounds of trash from the Prospect Lake area. The collection included 21,64 cigarettes and butts, 278 food wrappers and containers, 351 caps and lids, 149 plastic bottles, 36 cups and plastic utensils, 82 glass bottles and pieces of glass, and 447 other items including fishing line, hair ties, fish bait, balloons, string, foil, metal and one traffic sign! Thanks to our oceanography students and their teacher, Mrs. Owsley, for cleaning up our beautiful environment.

Doherty Freshman Is Named an All-American Scholar

The United States Achievement Academy announced recently that Kyle Boss, ninth-grade student at Doherty High School, has been named an All-American Scholar. The All-American Scholar Award Program is designed to offer recognition to superior students who excel in academic disciplines. The scholars must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. Only students selected by a school instructor, counselor or other qualified sponsor are accepted. Kyle was nominated by Irma Valerio, computer science teacher at Jenkins Middle School, which Kyle attended last year.

Doherty ProStart Student wins Scholarship

The Doherty ProStart scholarship recipient is Samantha Davidson, who received the Richard P Ayers Essay Scholarship (first place) with an award of $1,000 and the International Culinary Schools at the Art Institutes Scholarship with an award of $22,000. Samantha received another $500 scholarship from the Art Institutes for competing in the Best Teen Chef competition, and she also received another $1,500 scholarship to JWU. Samantha was also honored at the Restaurant Association award luncheon as the Doherty Outstanding ProStart student.

 

Doherty Student Attends Columbine Girls State
Thirty-five high school junior girls from the Pikes Peak region attended the 61st Colorado Columbine Girls State in June on the Western State College campus in Gunnison. The girls spent a week participating in the government education program. Colorado sent two delegates, selected by their peers in Gunnison, to Girls Nation in Washington, D.C., July 20.
School counselors usually select girls to apply for Girls State. The girls have to have good grades, be of high moral character and demonstrate leadership qualities. Doherty High School junior Breanna McAlister went to this year’s Girls State and was featured in a story in The Gazette on July 13.Breanna is quoted as saying that Columbine Girls State was like hundreds of Hillary Clintons running around. “The energy was just infectious … it turned out to be really fun and exciting … it did change my life.”

 

Doherty Takes Best in State at Colorado Ford/AAA Automotive Competition

Doherty High School Automotive/AYES instructor Brad Wheaton announces that Doherty High School automotive students won best in the state! Doherty’s 2008 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Team won first place at the state competition in Denver. With the team’s first-place victory, Doherty High School Auto has placed first in the state three years in a row. The winners, Sean Geese and Jordan Wood, have participated in the Doherty automotive program the last four years, and both just graduated. Each student received just over $60,000 in scholarships. Sean and Jordan had to decide which school to attend.

Doherty represented Colorado at the national competition in Dearborn, Mich., June 21-25, paid for by Ford/AAA. The Doherty team competed against 49 other teams from across the country. Each two-person state team had 90 minutes to "de-bug" a 2008 Ford vehicle. The bugs (problems) are put into the vehicle intentionally before the competition. The Doherty team also took a written test, which is considered in the scoring with the hands-on portion of the competition. Doherty High School placed 15th out of 50 at the national competition.
