May BAAC Meeting--last of the 2009-2010 school year!
Two important items will be voted on at the May 17 BAAC meeting (6p in the Spartan Room). Please join us if you can for the final BAAC meeting of the school year!
DHS Parent Council:
As mentioned at the April BAAC meeting this is a proposal to combine the BAAC and PTCO meetings starting with the school year 2010-2011 and change the name to Spartan Parent Council. After speaking with Dr. Thurman, (D11 Deputy Superintendent,) about this idea, she expressed, as long as BAAC, (which as of August 2010 will be referred to as SAC,) follows ae-r-2 policy, (attached,) we can form the meeting anyway we’d like to and call it anything we vote on with the approval of our principal. Mr. Vigil gave his approval today. Dr. Thurman also stated she liked the idea and was interested in seeing how it works as the school year progresses so she can share the concept with other schools.
The purpose of DHS combining the two groups is to maximize parent/community communication and involvement in the most efficient way. Cherry Creek school district in Denver has used this model in their schools and noticed an increase in attendance. They feel the combination of meetings has created an environment to, “foster communication and increased involvement.” SAC will continue to focus on the improvement of education, safety and the learning environment at DHS while PTCO continues to focuses on fundraising for the academic benefit of the student body. Together creating a place where parents can be involved in their child’s school, get answers and provide support.
The meeting length will be 1 hour, (1 ½ hours if needed for special presentations or guests.) The time will be divided between each item on the agenda to keep the meeting focused and respect the time of all in attendance. Bottom line, I know it takes a lot to give up an hour after a long day, so we will keep housekeeping items brief and make sure the meetings are worth the time invested. Guest speakers will be invited to target high school parents interest and insure the meetings are informative.
PTCO Officers will consist of a President, VP and Treasurer. SAC Officers will consist of a President, VP and Secretary as shown in the current DHS BAAC Bylaws. The new SAC policy states we have to have elections done by September 1st, therefore elections for both will be held at the first meeting of the school year, in August.

Proposed Sparta Parent Council Schedule for 2010-2011:
I recommend we move the meeting dates to the last Monday of each month. Beginning August 30, 2010, last meeting April 25, 2011, taking December off.
The third Monday of every month would be disrupted with no school days December – March.
