Dear Coronado Community:

Every fall the most anticipated week of the first quarter is Homecoming week. As I reflect on this year’s Homecoming activities, I have to say Coronado High School’s Homecoming is like no other. Our spirit days, pep assembly, powder puff football, Homecoming parade, tailgate picnic, football game, and dance all show an enthusiasm and level of participation by students, staff and parents that most schools can’t match. We are all exhausted but happy that Homecoming Week was a success.

One of the most treasured traditions of Homecoming is our annual Homecoming Parade down Colorado Avenue ending with a pep rally in Bancroft Park. The annual parade is one of the state’s largest and includes all of our feeder schools. This was our 39th annual parade. It is a wonderful school/community event that has been made possible by the contribution of many community members, most notably Rick Johnson of Johnson Plumbing and Heating and Steve Thune from Midwest Barricade who have provided barricades and labor at no cost for the last 25 years. However, the city has new requirements from a city ordinance passed last year, and the regulations around the number of barricades needed and certified people to place them will require the school to cover those expenses which are predicted to be approximately $5,000. We don’t want to see this tradition die and cannot expect our student council to fundraise that much money each year in addition to all the planning they must do for all the Homecoming activities. We therefore are asking for help from our parents, alumni, PTA and community to keep this tradition alive. Please contact Dan Hoff, Alumni President at 328-3650, Nora Brown, PTA at 528-6217 or Dave Howard, Business Manager at 328-3641 if you would like to help save the parade.

Homecoming always revolves around the football game and while the score was disappointing and the Cougars didn’t prevail, I have to relate a positive phone call I received this week which says it all. Ross Macaskill was the referee for our football game against Rock Canyon. He called to say how much he enjoyed working with our coaches and players. He said our sportsmanship was excellent, the captains didn’t get discouraged, and the coaches kept coaching in spite of the score. He said, “High school football on occasion disappoints us, I think, but certainly on that day it didn’t disappoint me.” What a compliment to our players and coaches!

In that spirit, I know that this community will continue to work together, not be discouraged by new challenges and be able to keep our Homecoming traditions alive for future generations of Coronado Cougars.

Warmest Regards,

Susan Humphrey
