Congratulations! You’ve decided to take on the challenges of AP English. Before you embark upon your exciting 2007-2008 school year, you owe it to yourself to play, relax, sleep, and travel - for a while. Manage your schedule, however, to include AP summer reading; you’ll want plenty of time to fully explore these thought-provoking selections - the focus of first semester:
King Lear – William Shakespeare
“I am a man more sinned against than sinning.”
Death of a Salesman - Arthur Miller
“Pop, I’m a dime a dozen and so are you.”
(this play is available in your Bedford, beginning on p. 1823)
Twelfth Night – William Shakespeare
“If music be the food of love, play on.”
Before you begin reading the plays, you must build a base. To that end, I am assigning pages from our primary test – The Bedford Introduction to Literature. This text is available for checkout in the school library. Pick up your copy before you leave for summer break. Read and take notes on the following:
Bedford selection Pages_____
- The Study of Drama 1233 – 1236
- Elements of Drama 1250 – 1254
- Writing About Drama 1275 – 1277
- Tragedy 1286 – 1288
- A Study of William Shakespeare 1383 – 1393
- Tragedy and the Common Man 1889 –1892
Apply what you’ve learned in these Bedford readings to your summer plays. Take notes. (attached: dialectical journal instructions) Look for and record at least five quotations from each play that you believe are tied to a specific theme. It is customary to purchase your own copies of the selections we study so that you can highlight, underline, and make marginal notes. Don’t, however, write in the Bedford text. Be prepared to take an objective test in the first two days of school. We will begin with King Lear.
A final word: As a college-level class, some contemporary works with adult themes and language will be included. Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, Toni Morrison’s Beloved, and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale are examples. These works assume mature readers, which I am sure you are. I look forward to working with you in the fall. Until then, read on. If you need to reach me any time this summer, my e-mail address is desropm@comcast.net. Feel free to drop a line.
