Ms. Ruttum and Dr. Madsen, sophomore honors English teachers, request you read two exceptionally good and important works of literature prior to returning to school for the 2007-2008 school year.  The two books and requirements are as follows:

            Title:  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn  (Mark Twain) 
Requirements: Read, reread, ponder, jot notes, and know this novel.
                                     An assessment of this novel will occur within the first two or three
days of school; it consists of a thorough examination of your skills as an analytical reader.  Therefore, it is imperative that you know the difference between reading a book for pleasure and analyzing a work of literature in a scholarly manner so that you can write effectively on it, using specific and precise evidence.  You need to read this work early in the summer; then reread and study the work just prior to returning to school.

            Title:  Death Comes for the Archbishop  (Willa Cather)
Requirements:  It is essential you prepare for Death Comes for the Archbishop in
the same manner as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.  An assessment will occur within the first few weeks of school; therefore, you will have some time to reread, to skim, and to study once school is in session.  Be sure to read the book during the summer, however.

Both works of literature are available in the media center and may be checked out before you leave for summer break.   You must return the bottom portion of this form by
May 22 to your current English teacher.   Have a lovely, literate summer!
