The Coronado Math Department had a good month in Math Competitions: We placed first in El Paso County (and 10 th in the state) in the Colorado Math League test. We also had 2 teams compete in an international competition with over
200 teams for which the team of Garrett Seeman, Tim Burgie and Jessi Manthei received honorable mention.
Finally, at the Math Olympiad competition at UCCS, Peter Jaron, Garrett Seeman and John Slavens received honorable mention.

Please congratulate once again Kara Allison, Kali Allison, Kelsey Brown, and Rachel Wolf for their
winning documentary on Caesar Chavez ~ !Viva la Huelga! !Viva la Causa! Although already bound
for the state History Day Competition, this group also competed in the Pioneer Museum History Day
competition and they took 1 st place! Onward to state and hopefully, nationals!

FCCLA (Family, Career, & Community Leaders of America) held their State Competition on April 4 th in Denver. The following students placed and received medals:
Kayla Hafer—Baking & Pastry— a Gold Medal and 1 st place
Austin Hilty—Gourmet Foods—a Gold Medal and 4 th place
Megan Jeffrey—Gourmet Foods—a Silver Medal and 6 th place
Jessica Aikens—Thematic Table Setting—a Gold Medal and 4 th place.
Kayla Hafer was named the Coronado ProStart Student of the Year! Great Job, Kayla!

The AP chemistry class with Mr. Smith and Ms. March’s Ceramics class got together to do an integrated
lesson on Raku Pottery. Raku was developed by the Japanese to use for sacred tea ceremonies.
Mr. Smith took the ceramics class and did some really cool experiments on metallic glazes and Ms. March
took the AP chemistry class and made handbuilt clay pots with them. The students learned the chemistry behind the art and put it all together on Friday April 11 th to do an all day Raku firing on the art patio! The weather was cold but the pots were hot!! About 1900 degrees when they were taken out of the portable kilns and thrust into a trash can full of newspapers
to burn. The results were amazing!! Look for the display in the showcase near the office to see our great work! The students and teachers had so much fun, this will definitely become a tradition at Coronado. Students are
realizing that science and art are both must have classes!!
