Cougar 9th and 10th Graders
Are you ready to push yourself harder in school? If you are, maybe Coronado’s AVID program is right for you. AVID’s mission is to ensure that all students, and especially the least served students who are in the middle, will succeed in a rigorous curriculum, complete a college-preparatory path, enter mainstream activities at Coronado, increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.
What AVID is...
• AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
• AVID is an in-school academic support program for grades 4-12 that prepares students for college eligibility and success.
• AVID places students in the academic middle in advanced classes and gives them the support to be successful.
• AVID levels the playing field for minority, low-income and other students without a college going tradition in their families.
• AVID is for all students, but it targets those in the academic middle.
• AVID is implemented school wide.
What AVID isn't...
• AVID isn't a remedial program.
• AVID isn't a free ride.
• AVID isn't a niche program.
• AVID isn't a college outreach program.
Coronado is looking for students who want to be successful in their classes and have a more rewarding high school experience. If you feel you have the potential and desire to attend a four-year college, have average to high test scores, have a 2.0 – 3.5 GPA, possess the desire and determination to be successful, have appropriate classroom behavior, have a good attendance record, and are ready to commit yourself to achieving your full potential you should seriously consider applying to Coronado’s AVID program. Take that first step in being a success and contact Coronado, ask for an AVID application, fill it out, and return it as soon as possible. Slots are limited.
Gifted and Talented News…
Coronado offers several opportunities for gifted learners. Options range Project Lead the Way to a variety of honors and Advanced Placement classes including CU Succeed Gold courses. Unfortunately, not all of our students take advantage of the challenging options available. If you would like to learn more about those options or have concerns about a student whose motivation for school learning isn’t as great as it should be and whose achievement is not as high as their aptitude would suggest give me a call. I can be reached at Coronado on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 328-3631.
Post-Secondary Options Available for Coronado Students
Jim Keating G/T Coordinator Post-secondary Options for Coronado Students. Many Coronado students are ready to complete challenging university course work and earn college credits while still in high school. At Coronado we recognize the need to provide programming options for those students who would benefit from early college education. Over 80 semester hours of Advanced Placement and CU Gold Courses are offered on the Coronado campus. Students can also gain college credit by preparing to take advantage of the College Level Examination Program. Each of these options has merit and should be examined closely by any student interested in earning college credit prior to high school graduation.
Advanced Placement Program
Advanced Placement classes cover content material stipulated by the College Board, which offers, for a fee, tests at the end of the year over that content. Students who score well enough on those exams may be awarded credit by colleges and may be excused from taking entry-level courses in the fields of study in which they took the exams. Advanced Placement classes are available to students as early as the sophomore year. Coronado offers AP classes in the following areas: Calculus AB, Calculus BC Statistics, United States History, World History, English Language, English Literature, Government and Politics: U.S., Microeconomics, Biology, Chemistry, Spanish, French, and German. Several of the Advanced Placement Courses are also aligned with our CU Gold offerings giving Coronado Students the option of taking an AP exam or enrolling in the course through the University of Colorado.
CU Gold Program
CU Succeed Gold courses are select introductory courses from CU Denver’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Arts & Media, and College of Engineering and Applied Science. These courses have the same content as on -campus courses, require the same quantity and quality of work, and are evaluated by the same high standards. These courses are taught here at Coronado and students receive concurrent high school and college credit. Credits earned in CU Succeed Gold courses are regular University of Colorado at Denver credits that are recorded on an official University of Colorado transcript. Policies regarding the transfer of credits and the ways in which they apply to degree requirements vary from institution to institution. As such, no institution can guarantee that all credits will be accepted by other institutions. Generally speaking, institutions that accept University of Colorado credits will accept credits earned in CU Succeed Gold courses. CU Gold courses not only give Coronado students the opportunity to earn college credits prior to graduating from high school, it reduces the time and expense of earning a bachelor’s degree. Students pay a reduced tuition rate for college credit while taking CU Gold courses. Full time college students at UCD currently pay $221 a credit hour. If student fees and living expenses are factored into those costs it can easily take the cost of attending an in-state college or university to nearly $500 a credit hour. Costs at some select colleges and universities are now in excess of $1500 a credit hour. Students enrolled in CU Gold courses pay only $150 for a three credit hour course. The $50 a credit hour our students pay for university credit can add up to thousands of dollars in savings. We have expanded the program this year with more course offerings and have made it possible for students to use Advanced Placement and CU Gold courses to complete in excess of 30 hours of college credit while enrolled at Coronado. The following University of Colorado courses are available for Coronado students:

Advanced Placement Scholar Awards
Eighteen students from Coronado High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level AP exams. Only about 18 percent of the more than 1.7 million students who took AP Exams in May 2009 performed at sufficiently high level to merit such recognition. Students take AP Exams in May after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement base on the number of yearlong courses and exams. David Dickson, Caitlin Fairhurst, Katie MacMillan, Kyle Yeh and Emma Ziegler qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Steven Allison, Maeva Djoumessi, Peter Jaron, John Meyer, Garrett Seeman, and John Slaven qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by completing four or more exams with grades of 3.25 or higher. Seven Coronado students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP examinations, with scores or 3 or higher. These students are Corrin Baker, Adrian Brown, Tim Burggie, Hannah Green, Kellie Luke, Caleb Mills, and Latraia Scott. Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP exams. AP courses along with the CU Succeed Gold Program allow Coronado students to complete up to a year of college while at Coronado. To learn more about these opportunities contact your counselor or Jim Keating.
Congratulations!
Corrin Baker, Peter Jaron, and Devin Kimball, recognized as National Merit Commended Students for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the National Merit qualifying test.
