Chipeta PTA

General meeting

October 3, 2006

 

Call To Order:

The general meeting of the Chipeta PTA was held in room #19 at Chipeta Elementary on Tuesday, October 3, 2006, and called to order at 6:37 p.m. President Stacy Papenfuss presided, and Heidi Lagasca recorded the minutes. As many new committee members have joined, introductions were made and voting protocol was once again reviewed.

 

Minutes:

The minutes of the August 22, 2006, meeting were approved.

 

Treasure’s Report:

The financial report was approved by consensus.

 

Guest Speakers

  • Glenn Gustafson spoke on Amendment 39. He then opened the floor to discussion and questions.
  • Dave Allison and Jim Hastings from the District 11 Security Office came to discuss possible upgrades of our security procedures and school safety in general at Chipeta due to the two recent school shootings.

 

Discussion:

A discussion followed of ways that the Chipeta PTA could help upgrade the safety of our students at Chipeta. Some of the ideas included an assembly for the students regarding safety, diligence of parents when visiting the school to sign in and wear name tags, staff training for emergencies, and possibly using money raised by the PTA to help upgrade our security such installing a mirror in the office and/or possibly a doorbell.

 

Principal’s Report:

  • A special thank you to Tonya Shepherd for her hard work on the entertainment book sales.
  • Every building in District 11 has completed radon testing.
  • Parent/teacher conferences on October 26 with additional days as per the teacher.
  • All tutor positions have been filled to include Tanya Shepherd and Christine Benne.
  • We had 387 students on Count Day.
  •  Capital Plan – would like ideas and suggestions. There is $40,000 in bond money and $56,000 available for site-determined projects.

 

President’s Report:

  • The new popcorn machine has arrived. The old popcorn machine was donated to another elementary school.
  • New playground equipment soon to do be installed.
  • We are mentoring Jefferson Elementary School, and 2 of their PTA board members were in attendance. Members of their PTA may contact our committee members with questions.
  • Scholarships for the enrichment program were discussed. A motion was made by Stacey Stautz to set aside $100.00 for Enrichment scholarships. The motion passed.

 

Committee Reports:

Box Tops:  A total of 2815 box tops have been collected for a total of $281.00. Mrs. Smith’s class is in the lead with 610 box tops.

 

Printer Cartridges:  We have had our first pickup.

 

BAAC Liaison:  Christine Benne reviewed the SIP with us.

 

Artsmart:  Training sessions for Artsmart took place on October 3, and all classes have volunteers with the exception of Mr. Gretto’s class.

 

Board of the Arts:  We have 2 new members, Amber Besse and Ayashi Furtado. Would like ideas on how to advertise this year’s Reflections program and how to gain interest.

 

Carnival/Sock Hop:  There was a good response with the Tickets for Time on the Sock Hop, which is October 20th.

 

Health and Safety:  Thank you to those who helped with Vision and Hearing Screening. Safety Town is October 17.

 

Hospitality:  They will be updating the teacher survey for Teacher Appreciation and are asking our input on the survey. The Winter Luncheon is coming along nicely.

 

Legislative:  New member, Fran Blayney.

 

Membership:  We have 201 members. Directories are coming out soon. We have 18 advertisements for the directory.

 

Read Naturally:  Training was last Thursday. They are in need of more volunteers for 30-minute time slots.

 

Publication:   The deadline for articles to be submitted to Kristin Abernethy is October 26. She asks that you please send your articles to her in Times New Roman, font size 12, with no columns.

 

Student Enrichment:  Flyers have gone out for the upcoming enrichment classes.

 

Volunteers:  We have 4 new members through the Tickets for Time – great response!

 

Ways and Means:  Thank you to the moms who collected money in the different classrooms for the Entertainment Book fundraiser. This fundraiser made a $10,700 profit for the PTA. There are 27 Pizza Palz still available in the office. Art to Remember will be going out the end of October.  Bingo is November 3; volunteers for baked goods would be very welcomed.

 

Yearbooks:  Nothing to report. May possibly be able to help out the Board of the Arts by giving some space on the front of the yearbooks for this artwork – need more discussion.

 

 

 

 

 

New Business:

A vote was taken by PTA committee members in attendance regarding Amendment 39. Chipeta PTA voted 24/1 to vote “no” as a whole on Amendment 39.

 

Dana Durrance made a motion that $10.00 be awarded to each teacher to spend at the Chipeta book fair, for a total of $360.00. The motion was passed.

Candidate Forum to be held October 19 at Bates Elementary School. A motion was made by Candy Archdale to give $35.00 to help with rental fees for the setup of this forum. The motion was passed.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:53 p.m.
