Buena Vista Elementary School is located on the West Side of Colorado Springs
School District 11. Nestled in a historic district of the city close to
Old Colorado City, Buena Vista was build in 1911 and is one of the school
district’s most beautiful buildings. With beveled glass front doors,
hardwood floors, wainscoting and the antique hooks for children’s coats it is
hard not be nostalgic.
The school was built using the theory of John Dewey, that students should
learn in smaller communities so that school would not be frightening. This
concept created individual cottages instead of one massive building and adds to
the charm and warmth of Buena Vista elementary school.
Additions and modernization of the building were done in the 1930s, 1950s,
and recently significant renovations to the mechanical systems of the school
have taken place.
The staff of Buena Vista is a caring highly qualified set
of people that are focused on the growth of each student. At Buena Vista we
focus on the needs of each individual student in order to best prepare them for
the future. High expectations and outstanding performance are the hallmarks of
the outstanding staff.
Currently, Buena Vista Elementary School is again changing
with the times. As enrollment declined and fears of the communities treasured
neighborhood school being closed were emerging, the Buena Vista parents, staff,
and community have rallied to create a new tradition at Buena Vista Elementary
School.
A five-year plan has been proposed and accepted by the Colorado Springs
School District 11 Board of Education to make Buena Vista Elementary School
Colorado Springs' first public Montessori school. This Westside
neighborhood saw the need to embrace an academically proven curriculum that
could attract parents outside of the neighborhood to the school in order to keep
the neighborhood school open and it truly shows an overwhelming love for this
school and its’ traditions.
As the school transitions to the Montessori philosophy the community, staff,
and parents are striving to keep student achievement, open communication, and
teamwork as the hallmarks of our school.
Parents and the community are involved through the
Parent
Teacher Association, Building Accountability Committee and the School Planning
and Management Team. These committees develop and monitor the building goals
and providing ongoing input into the future of Buena Vista Elementary School.
Other opportunities are available for parents, guardians, and grandparents to
become involved in their students lives through contacting the front office.
Buena Vista Elementary School provides a positive atmosphere for students to
progress. The staff is committed to improving each student’s academic
performance and each student’s well being. Student’s rights are protected at
Buena Vista through the “Bully Proofing” program that is taught to all classes
by the school psychologists.
Dignity, respect for each other and being responsible for one’s actions are
expected behavior of all students.
