School Information
(top) Accountability Committee Bristol School has an ongoing Accountability Committee made up of interested parents, community members, teachers and school principal. The purpose of this council is to:
(top) Arrival and Departure Times and Day's Schedule 7:52
Line-up Primary
Lunch (K,1,2) 10:55 - 11:15 Intermediate
Recess (3,4,5) 10:55 - 11:15 Primary Recess 9:40 - 9:50 a.m. The school grounds open at 7:40 a.m. The playground is not supervised until that time. Please do not permit your child to arrive early unless he/she is involved in a specific school activity. Children will be expected to be off school grounds by 2:45 p.m. unless prior arrangements have been made. If it is necessary to keep a child after school for more than 20 minutes, parents will be notified. It must be understood that regular school attendance is an essential component of the educational process. The failure to regularly/punctually attend school may have a detrimental effect on the attitude and performance of the child. Characteristics such as poor interaction skills, a negative self-concept, an inability to complete assigned tasks and never achieving individual potential could occur and extend into adulthood. Colorado State Law requires a student to attend school until his sixteenth birthday. Compulsory education is mandatory in the United States, therefore, it is the parent(s) or guardian(s) responsibility to ensure that the child attends school. Students are expected to be punctual (9:15 a.m. starting time) and in attendance for the full day. IF STUDENTS ARE ABSENT TEN (10) OR MORE DAYS PER SCHOOL YEAR, excluding extenuating circumstances, approved by the principal, AN ORDER OF NON-COMPLIANCE WILL BE FILED IN JUVENILE COURT. At that juncture, the situation becomes a legal matter. There are occasions when, due to illness, injury or emergencies, student(s) need to be absent from school. These absences require the parent(s) or guardian(s) to call the school explaining the absence before 9:00 a.m. (use the Attendance Line, 328-4011). Any other absence must be prearranged through the teacher. Either the student or parent may request make-up work from the teacher immediately following an absence. Failure to complete work missed may result in the loss of credit, lowered grades or retention. Students will be given time to make up work missed during their absence. Please give advance notice when classroom/homework assignments are to be picked up. These assignments will be available after school. If leaving on a trip for any reason, please give the teacher 1-3 days notice to organize any work to be taken along. District Eleven policy states that make-up work must be completed within the same number of days as the student was absent. For example, if the student is absent for two days, all absent work is due two days after the student returns to Bristol. Each make-up assignment not completed will be recorded as a zero. School attendance is important. Once children are in attendance for the day, they are excused to leave only upon the request of a parent or guardian. Students leaving school before the regular dismissal time must be signed out in the office. Parents or guardians who wish to pick up their child from school during school hours are asked to go to the office, sign their child out and someone from the office staff will call the child to the office. If the child returns prior to the end of school he/she must be signed back in at the office. We appreciate your cooperation in this safety procedure. Tardy students are to report to the office before going to their classroom. A written excuse giving date(s) of absence(s) is required upon return to school. (top) Behavior Standards - Coronado Cluster TARGET: Life-Long Learning – Students will actively pursue and apply self-management, organizational skills and learning as a life-long process. TASK: Being a student at Bristol is "your job", in the same way your parents have jobs at their workplace and at home. The qualities and behaviors that "bosses" look for in the people they hire and count on are what your teachers look for in students "doing a good job". It’s important that all of us, adults and children, know what a "good job" is and then work at doing a good job. You will be evaluating yourself as a learner, and setting goals to improve. READY TO LEARN As a student, I will:
EFFORT AND PARTICIPATION As a student, I will:
RESPECT I will:
HANDLING MY PROBLEMS If I have a problem, I will:
(top) Bicycles, Scooters and Skateboards Bicycles and scooters may be ridden to school by the students but skateboards and skates need to be left at home. We ask that students walk their bicycles and scooters on school property. Each student must have a lock and lock them on the bicycle racks. Parents need to train their young cyclist in proper bicycle and scooter safety procedures. CERTIFICATES OF MERIT: Awarded to children who have shown significant gains in academic areas, social areas, accepting responsibility, work study habits and any other areas that deserve recognition. ALL STAR AWARDS: Given by teachers to support a child who has shown outstanding citizenship or academic excellence. Children receive certificates at the awards assembly, however the recipients are featured with their picture on a bulletin board in the front hall during the year. CITIZENSHIP AWARDS: Each quarter the classroom teacher awards a maximum of two of these awards to students who are exemplary role models in all aspects of student life. HONOR ROLL: The third, fourth and fifth grade students participate in this program. Honor roll recognizes students who are working at their individual ability level and have achieved all "A"s and/or "B"s. High honor roll recognizes those who have earned all "A"s and working at individual ability level. (top) Buses and Bus Guidelines Some of our children are eligible for bus transportation to and from school. Proper behavior is expected at both the bus stop and on the bus. Failure to act appropriately could result in the loss of bus privileges. ONLY REGULARLY SCHEDULED BUS STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO RIDE THE BUS. BUS GUIDELINES
Infractions will result in referrals written by the drivers. 1st referral – Visit to Principal’s office 2nd referral – Visit to Principal’s office 3rd referral – 1 day bus suspension 4th referral – 3 days bus suspension 5th referral – 5 days bus suspension Further referrals could result in revocation of all bus privileges. Please review this with your child(ren). (top) Change of Address, Telephone Numbers, etc. The office MUST be notified of any change in occupation, phone number, or plans for withdrawing from school. It is very important that we have a telephone number where parents can be reached in case of emergency. (top) Class Assignments\Homework Policy The purpose of this policy is two-fold. First, this policy helps develop a higher degree of student responsibility. Secondly, it keeps parents informed about their child’s missing work on a weekly basis. MISSING WORK: Parents and students will be informed daily of missing work via the Bristol Assignment Book. THESE ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN ONE DAY OR THE ZERO (S) WILL BE PERMANENT. The assignments are to be labeled "Late" above the student’s names and will be recorded as one grade lower due to lateness. SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS: Students who have incomplete or missing work need to see the teacher about what specific assignments(s) need to be completed. It is the student’s responsibility to write down any work missed. RESPONSIBILITY: This policy places the responsibility for absent and missing work squarely on the shoulders of the student(s). Parent(s) need to check that their student bring the Bristol Assignment Book home daily so they too may be better informed. All assignments not completed and turned in will be highlighted and marked with an "M". To improve home/school communication, all intermediate students (3-5 grade) will receive a weekly grade check in their Friday envelope with the expectation that parents will examine, sign and return it on the following Monday. These will be kept by the teachers to insure accountability for the student’s quarterly grade. Your assistance in monitoring your child’s dress for appropriateness and safety is appreciated. Students should dress in a manner that will permit them to participate in all school-related activities. Students should exercise good judgment and be appropriately attired for the classroom. We are proud of our school, and the students reflect this pride in their adherence to rules of cleanliness, sensibility and good taste in dress. Extreme types of attire are not acceptable for either boys or girls. Inappropriate writing and/or picture on any items of clothing are considered in poor taste, and students will be asked to refrain from wearing these particular articles. Short shorts and skirts, "crop" tops, tank tops, and torn or cut clothing are not considered appropriate. Hats or any head covering may not be worn anywhere in the building. We support educational field trips that coincide with the student’s curriculum. Participation in class field trips will be left to teacher discretion based on classroom behavior and self-control. (top) Gifted and Talented Program District #11 has provided a Gifted and Talented Resource teacher one day a week for Bristol. Call the school at 328-4010 and ask for the Gifted and Talented coordinator for more information. (top) Guidelines for Student Safety During Inclement Weather Students will be allowed entry into the building fifteen minutes before classes convene when outside temperature at the school site is less than 15 degrees and/or conditions of precipitation are present. Wind currents must also be considered. With temperature less than 15 degrees and/or conditions of precipitation present, elementary students will be permitted to remain indoors during recess and lunch periods. Wind currents must also be considered. Written parental requests for students to remain indoors for chronic health reasons during school hours will be honored. The principal is responsible for all decision making for conditions not presented in these guidelines. The phone contact and medical information you provide on your child’s enrollment form will be used if he/she becomes sick or is injured at school – PLEASE KEEP THIS INFORMATION CURRENT. Colorado Springs School District #11 offers a supplementary student accident insurance policy. If a District #11 child has a supplemental insurance and is injured while attending classes or participating in school-sponsored activities, a student accident claim form may be picked up from the office. The supplementary student accident policy will pay only after all other applicable insurance has paid. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE DISTRICT DOES NOT CARRY ACCIDENT INSURANCE FOR YOUR CHILD ON YOUR BEHALF. Misplaced items will be stored in a wooden chest in the hallway outside the office. At the end of each semester unclaimed items will be donated to a charitable organization. (top) Lunch/Breakfast Facilities Bristol does have a hot lunch and breakfast program. All students are invited to eat breakfast or hot lunch at school, or they may bring a sack lunch. Please check with the office for the prices of both breakfast and lunch. We would prefer to have students pay by the week of possible. For those children who bring a sack lunch, regular and chocolate milk are offered. Reduced and free breakfasts and lunches are available for qualifying families. The breakfast menu is served between 8:50 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. Bused students are also invited to eat breakfast. If your child qualifies for a free or reduced breakfast/lunch, please complete a form and return to the school office. Children are expected to observe the lunchroom rules and behave accordingly, following the instructions of the lunchroom supervisors.
We realize that many chronic or acute health conditions require that medication be given during school hours. However, when possible, try to schedule medication administration at home. For example, a medication scheduled to be given 3 times per day may be given before school, after school, and before bed time. A Student Medication Form is available in the Bristol office. This is for your convenience. If you should go to the doctor and medication is prescribed to be given during school hours, have the doctor complete the form, sign the parent authorization and return it to the school office with your student’s medication. If you go to the doctor’s office and don’t have the form, have him write an authorization on a prescription pad or an authorization form can be faxed to the doctor’s office and faxed back to the school. The school fax number is 630-0182. This should include:
Medications must come in the original container with proper labeling. Prior written authorization must be received from both the parent/guardian and the physician. NO MEDICATION WILL BE GIVEN IF IT COMES IN A BAGGIE, PLAIN BOTTLE, ENVELOPE, ETC. A signed release from liability which may result from giving the medication must be on file. Over the counter medications will not be administered unless prescribed by a physician and authorized by the parent/guardian. This has been adopted into Board of Education policy. For safety reasons, medication is kept in a locked cabinet in the school office and administered by a school secretary. We are concerned about the health and well-being of all students. If you have questions regarding our medication policy or special concerns about your student’s health care, please contact the school. (top) Parent/Teacher Association We sincerely hope the parents will not only join, but take an active part in the PTA. This organization has done much for the students at Bristol School and we, in turn, shall do all Within our power to contribute to its success. The goals of the P.T.A. The PTA provides parents and teachers with a way to share their experience and knowledge about children. PTA members support public education and work to improve children’s health and safety. PTAs speak on behalf of children who can’t affect change for themselves at local, state, and national government levels. Through the years Bristol PTA has provided many worthwhile educational and family-oriented activities. Plan to take an active part in the organization which strives to make the future brighter for all children. (top) Parent/Teacher Conferences Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled with all parents at the end of the first quarter and on an as needed basis throughout the remainder of the year. Report cards are sent home with your child. (top) Procedure for Discipline Problems We will make every effort to communicate with the children the classroom expectations, playground safety, conduct to and from school and general behavior expectations at Bristol. The first line of discipline is the teacher/child relationship. Hopefully, most problems can be solved in brief conferences. For repeated, undesirable behavior the parents will be contacted. If a child continually misbehaves, the teacher’s usual procedures are:
If a child receives a discipline referral, it will be handled by the teacher involved with possible referral to the principal. The Number/Color behavior management system is in effect at Bristol: First, Second, and Third Grades will use a color system with the following colors and consequences: Green – Starting point Yellow – Warning Red – 5 minutes on footprints Blue – Entire recess on footprints Orange - Referral to go home that night Fourth and Fifth grades will use a number system using the following numbers and consequences: 0 – No Problem -5 – Warning -15 – Entire recess on footprints -20 – Referral to be sent home that night Positive numbers can be given; +30 will earn extra recess Disrespectful language towards any individual is not acceptable and if it occurs the parent may be notified and requested to come to the school to take the child home. Student physical confrontations, harassment of other students and/or the use of foul language will result in an immediate referral. As in all aspects of school life, special circumstances may call for modification of the above policies due to specific needs of individual children. Outdoor play during scheduled recesses is expected of all children unless weather conditions are severe. A child too ill to participate in these short activities is probably not well enough to be in school. A school calendar is sent home at the end of each school year or is available in the office. A monthly calendar is included in our monthly newsletter. Please make note of school closure dates. Students may check books out from the school library. In all cases they will be financially responsible for any damaged, lost, or stolen books while the book is checked out in their name. Books are checked out for a week at a time. Parents are asked to help their children in remembering to return their books on time. Although there are no fines for overdue books, we strongly encourage students to learn and practice good library habits from the beginning. Continued misuse of library books will lead to library privileges being revoked. Pursuant to the Buckley Amendment and the Annual Notification of Rights, kindly be informed of your parental rights to review your child’s school records. The procedure is outlined in Colorado School District #11 Board of Education Policy JO-R. (top) Student Responsibilities Bristol students will be expected to respect all individuals with whom they come into contact. Requests will be polite ("May I please") and mannerly responses are expected. We feel strongly that a student is responsible for his or her own behavior. Good behavior has a direct effect on the student’s learning environment as well as affecting the learning atmosphere for others. This type of behavior also enhances the safety of the school. The staff at Bristol has developed four general guidelines for all students. These four rules are as follows:
Parent visitations are welcome at Bristol. Please contact the person(s) you would like to visit in advance. When you enter the building, sign in at the office and obtain a button (Parent, Volunteer or Visitor). Children not enrolled at Bristol Elementary CAN NOT BE SENT with the regular students to visit. Telephones are installed at each grade level. These phones will be used for better communication between home and school. Children may use them to call home with their teacher’s approval. Incoming calls will be put through to individual rooms during non-teaching times. A message will be taken or a voice mail message could be left for incoming calls that come in during teaching time. (top) Textbook, Student Assignment Books, and School Supplies Textbooks and workbooks are furnished in all grades free of charge. A fine will be assessed for negligent damage as is the case for any school property. Student assignment books used for weekly planning and assignments are given free of charge. A replacement fee of $2.00 is charged for lost assignment books. Parents need to sign the parent signature line in the assignment books daily and look for communication from the teacher as well as use the space to communicate back to the teacher. A supply list for items the students will need for use in the classroom is available in the office. (top) Walking to and from School Please discuss pedestrian safety with you child and the importance of walking directly to and from school. Consider emergency measures in the event your child arrives home and there is no one home. Since the parking lot had to be closed, it is even more important that all students use the crosswalk to cross Walnut Street. Please help by being a good example for our students. A weekly envelope will be sent home every Friday containing completed assignments, grade check (grades 3-5) and information from the office, newsletters, permission forms, etc. Please review all the material and send the empty envelope back to the school on the following Monday with your signature on the outside of the envelope. These envelopes are used all year and made of a very durable paper. The cost of a replacement envelope is $.50. |
